A small analysis on FileMaker Error 808 and tips to resolve database corruption

Mark Willium
FileMaker is an easy-to-use database management system that enables both the naive and professional users to effectively manage their private or work-related information. You can create custom databases according to your business needs and easily publish your database to the web. It also enables you to share information among users over a network. FileMaker databases have higher storage capacities as compared to the desktop database applications. However, there are several reasons responsible for causing corruption in a FileMaker database. Some of the most prominent ones include virus infection, hardware errors, abnormal system shutdown, etc. These cases may lead to complete database inaccessibility. To overcome this problem, you need to go for FileMaker recovery through a reliable third-party utility.

Let's assume a real time scenario. While using a FileMaker database or trying to access the records of a particular table, you may encounter the below given error on your screen:

"Error 808: Can not open file due to damaged access privileges"

Causes: The above error usually occurs when you try to access the portion of file that is damaged. Another reason may be that the region of data containing the password is corrupt. In such cases, you are very likely to come across several access privilege error messages.

This would render your FileMaker database inaccessible and hence, cause severe data loss. If you have a recent/updated backup, you can easily restore your database. However, if the backup is missing, you should follow the below mentioned resolution steps.

Resolution: Try any of the following methods to resolve the issue:

'Save As Compacted Copy':

Start FileMaker Pro and open the corrupt database.

Go to 'File' menu. Select 'Save a Copy As' and then click 'Compacted copy (smaller)'

    Check the database.

'Recover':

    Start FileMaker Pro.

Go to 'File' menu and select 'Recover'. Select the corrupt database and then click 'Open'.

    Now, check the file.

You may need to reestablish the indexes for resolving any relational issues.

If the problem still persists, take help of a proficient FileMaker repair tool. These third-party software have advanced, indigenous mechanisms to safely repair corrupt FileMaker databases and recover all valuable tables and other objects in the database. Furthermore, they are compatible with all Mac-Intel based computers having Mac OS X 10.5 and above.
