HOW TO TREAT CUSTOMERS AND PATIENTS THE RIGHT WAY

Christiane Tourtet B.A.
For a very large and ever growing number of people in America, there is great amount of dissatisfaction, being treated without respect, in a condescending way, being addressed inappropriately as sweetie, love, darling, honey,..etc in places of business, and especially in doctor´s offices, hospitals, clinics..etc. It is very important that employees show utmost respect to all customers, patients, especially the elderly.

It is true that some people do not mind being addressed this way, and may even like it. However, there is a social etiquette, that ought to be followed diligently, and that is, you do not address people in such manner.

1 - The proper way to address customers , patients, is to respectfully, and courteously, call them as Sir, Ma´am , followed by their last name as necessary, such as in doctor´s office, hospitals, clinics,..etc. Persons such as Reverends, PhD´s, Governors, Senators, Judges just to name a few, should be addressed with their respective titles. In given circumstances, a polite, professional, handshake and attitude are in order.

2 - Do not call customers, patients, by their first name, unless given permission to do so.

3- Never , under any circumstances, address them as sweetie, doll, darling, honey, love,..etc. as it is extremely inappropriate in places of businesses, and even more so, in doctor´s offices, hospitals, and clinics.

4- The fact that a person becomes a patient, does not gives the right to employees to call them in inappropriate ways as it is done in so many places! Medical personel should be reminded, and urged to stop putting every patient in the same basket, as many persons, labeled as "patients" can be highly educated people, such as Engineers, Scientists, PhD's, Prominent Personalities, Reverends, Governors, Senators, and should be addressed appropriately with all due respects!

5- Employees must stop calling impatiently the name of patients, and rudely, order them to fill out forms as it is done, unfortunatly in so many places. They also should be taught, to work quietly, instead of talking, laughing, chatting, loudly virtually non-stop with other employees.

6- Many employees must be made fully aware, to stop acting as if they were in supreme power, the moment, an individual becomes a "patient". This attitude is extremely detrimental, totally unacceptable and has been going on for too long in so many places. Things are changing, as more and more people refuse to be treated in such a way, and complaints and even boycotts are becoming reality, to put a stop to such unacceptable behavior.

7 - Many doctors, nurses, therapists, should be reminded to never cross the professional line between, what is a necessary professional physical contact with an individual , who happens to be a "patient" in their care, and the totally inappropriate behavior of a female nurse, or therapist for instance, sitting too close to a male patient, once therapy is over, putting her hand on his shoulder, or on his lap, holding hands and rubbing the arm or chest of a male patient in an affective way, using their job many times as a disguise, to get close to a male patient they are physically attracted to, as complaints may be filed against them.

8 - Again, many employees in the medical field, should be reminded, that it is not ok to get physically close to a patient, without his/her consent unless it is an absolute necessity, nor is it ok, to become emotionally close to a patient, contrary to what they might have being taught , as many people are very private, reserved, and do not consent in any way, to have their physical and emotional privacy invaded. So, many medical employees must learn to respect the total privacy of patients as per their wishes.

9 - It is also not ok to barge like bullies in the home of patients, they are caring for. It is very important that they learn to be polite, humble, courteous, wait, until the person in charge of the home, show them the way, and must stop the unacceptable, rude, commanding, overpowering, invading attitude, so many of them have, towards patients and their families.

Teaching skills of reeducation to a patient must be done with respect, professionalism, and courtesy at all times. However from recent findings, there is instead severe abuse of power, over patients and their families and this needs to stop!

10 - They should be made aware to respect the cultural differences, principles, values, of their patients and families. There are countries where it is totally unacceptable for a woman to sit close to a man who is not her husband, or relative, and even more so, to even brush his hand. There are many reserved people who allow close emotional relations and physical closeness, only with their mate, partners, families, carefully selected friends, and medical personel should be taught to not invade the emotional and physical privacy of their patients , even more so, for people of different cultures, origins and backgrounds.

Things need to improve in America, in regard to social behavior, attitudes, and one of the best way to do that, is to be considerate of other people, different values, principles, origins, cultures, and most of all follow the social etiquette of utmost respect, courtesy and professionalism at all times, at places of business and of medical establishments.
