Being Soft Displays Greater Strength and Self Confidence

This may seem to some to be a rather strange title. We are after all encouraged to stand up for ourselves, put our feet down, to stand firm and so on, as ways in which we can build and display our strength and commitment to our selves and our purpose.

When we consider being strong we tend to think in terms of standing firm as opposed to being soft and yielding. But inevitably we all know the truth which lies in this title.

Ultimately, to be soft and flexible is a far more powerful way in which to be strong. This fact of life is illuminated in this quote from Laozi's Daode Jing :-

"The soft always overpowers the strong. Nothing can be softer than water, however, nothing can destroy the hardest thing like water."

There is a time and a place for everything. There is a time to be soft and a time to be tough. Most often softness, caring, thoughtfulness and a willingness to bend will reap far greater rewards than being tough, hard and inflexible. Not only that, it is in fact easier and more rewarding to be soft and giving. This doesn´t mean that you should be a door-mat.

When you feel confident in yourself, secure in your own beliefs and moral code, you can be soft and yielding without getting lost. With inner confidence you can be the soft water that flows around tough obstacles. The hard rocks that you encounter eventually have to loosen and move with the flow or else they will simply erode into oblivion.


Being soft is sustainable. Being tough and hard is not. To place a hard shell around your emotions and your heart eventually ends up strangling your own heart and life. Toughness and hardness cause ones world to shrink. To be soft like water allows your world to expand, to move, advance, to flow freely and easily. Softness leads to a greater richness in life.

Softness reflects the inner strength of real self-confidence, real self-belief and self-trust. To be tough and hard reflects self-doubt and fear. Whenever you find yourself in a situation whereby you are unyielding you will probably also discover beneath this outer expression an inner sense of fear or threat.

Fear is the greatest culprit that causes immobilization. Fear, at its worst, has the power to freeze you in one spot and turns you into a rock.
