How to Avoid Swollen Feet?

Amit Kothiyal
Swollen feet can occur due to numerous reasons. Some of the reasons can be directly avoided whereas the others require concentrated effort. The causes can range from being isolated in the foot or leg or be symptomatic of a malaise that is affecting the entire body.

Causes

Swollen feet causes can be isolated in the feet itself. A sprain or a twists in the ankle, any physical strain could be a cause. Bad footwear, pronation (when the feet fall towards each other more than they should), supination (when the feet fall away from each other more than they should) can also be a cause as they adversely affect the posturing of the feet.

Arthritis in the joints around the ankles or the main skeleton of the foot could also cause swelling. Sometimes, something as simple as tight socks which are hindering the blood and fluid flow to and from the feet could lead to fluid buildup (edema) and cause the feet to swell up.

Other swollen feet causes are that represent a problem or disorder with another part of the body in which the swelling is a symptom of this disorder. These happen when the venous system of the leg is affected causing edema. This can be caused by –

  • Heart Disease

  • Obesity

  • Kidney or Liver Failure

  • Pregnancy can also cause swollen feet.

    Treatment

Swollen feet treatment depends completely on what has caused the swelling. Though in all cases non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSADs) are prescribed to ease the pain that accompanies the swelling. However these should not be taken without consulting your physician.

In case of it being a strain or a sprain, the general procedure includes resting the injure foot, bandaging it and using pain relieving balms or ointments. The swelling subsides within a few weeks as the injured muscle heals.

Similarly, using correct footwear appropriate to the type of exercise will remove the element of bad posture that could have caused the swollen feet. In case of over-pronation and over-supination, one can buy shoe sole inserts from footwear specialists to correct the posture of the feet.

Pregnancy induced swelling again involves procedures such as wearing lose socks and comfortable shoes, not over exerting, elevating the foot, drinking fluids to correct the fluid imbalance and other remedies such foot soaks in warm water, massages etc.

Swollen feet treatment for swelling caused by heart diseases, kidney or liver failure, obesity etc requires administration of medication to correct the problem. One can identify this as the cause if the onset of swelling is unexpected and none of the previous causes fit. In such a case, it is advised to consult a doctor who will be best suited to advise you on the future course of action.
