Business Leaders of America

Jay Lillie
Entrepreneurial leaders do not have a mindset that adapts to failure. Things go wrong, of course, but entrepreneurs don´t call them "failures" they call them "glitches, mistakes, bungles, setbacks", but not failing.

When one such entrepreneur was asked about the hardest decision he ever had to make, he answered that he did not know what a hard decision was. An entrepreneur will approach decision-making with the idea that there´s a strong likelihood that he/she will be wrong. This does not dissuade them to the contrary they just do the best they can and worry about handling obstacles as they arise.

Here are a few top entrepreneurs in the U.S.:

EnergyPoint Research

Against a backdrop of increased shale gas development and production across the U.S., EnergyPoint Research´s newest survey indicates domestic natural gas midstream providers now enjoy a modest increase in overall customer satisfaction levels compared to two years ago. The study, completed in November 2011, is the industry´s biennial benchmark measuring customers´ satisfaction with providers of gathering, processing, treating and related gas-servicing needs. Taking first place in the survey in terms of total satisfaction was MarkWest Energy Partners. The company´s ratings were driven by top marks in the category of project development, and by its ratings in the ArkLaTex and Marcellus regions. Copano Energy was this year´s runner-up in terms of total satisfaction, taking top spots in the areas of operations and systems and administration. Copano also rated first in the categories of onshore gathering, processing and treating, and gas/NGL purchasing, as well as in the Mid-continent and onshore Gulf Coast regions.

Angel MedFlight

Angel MedFlight medically transports patients to health care facilities around the world. Many of those flights have transported brain-injured patients to specialty rehabilitation centers where they receive comprehensive treatment. After being struck by a car in the Virgin Islands, a severely injured Long Island woman is back in New York, thanks to the efforts of her mother, Congressman Tim Bishop and Angel MedFlight. Kelly Breem suffered a traumatic brain injury Nov. 14 when she was hit by a car while crossing a street on the island of St. Thomas, USVI. She fell into a coma and remained partially paralyzed at a St. Thomas hospital since then. When Breem´s mother, Althea Richardson, learned that the hospital did not have the faculties available to treat her daughter´s brain stem injury, she made a plea to her local congressman, Tim Bishop, for help. Congressman Bishop directed his office to work on Ms. Breem's behalf after learning that she could only receive the medical care she needs in the mainland U.S., and the cost of a medical evacuation flight was prohibitive for the family. He contacted leading international air medical transport provider Angel MedFlight for the flight. "Kelly and her family needed our help in this tragic situation, and I thank Angel MedFlight for being true to their name and immediately offering their life-saving services free of charge," says Congressman Bishop. When Rep. Bishop´s staff informed Angel MedFlight CEO Jeremy Freer of the severity of Ms. Breem´s condition, Freer offered to perform the air ambulance flight at no charge. "No two brain injuries are alike and studies have shown that patients who receive treatment at brain injury rehabilitation facilities make more progress in their recoveries," says Freer. "We are pleased to partner with Congressman Bishop and provide Kelly´s medical flight so that she has access to the specialized care she needs in New York."

Small World Journeys

Australian eco-tour company Small World Journeys has secured astronomer and 2011 Nobel Laureate Dr. Brian Schmidt as an exclusive guest speaker on their adventure itineraries based around the 2012 eclipse, Australia. The tropical Cairns region will be one of the best spots in the world from which to view the eclipse, and guests will have a choice of seeing this event from the basket of a hot air balloon, from a tropical island, or from a boat at The Great Barrier Reef. This year´s Nobel Prize winner for physics, Professor Brian Schmidt, will speak only to Small World Journeys guests at a special presentation in Cairns about the eclipse. "Witnessing a total solar eclipse in itself is a tick on your bucket list," said Laurie Pritchard, Small World Journeys´ Managing Director, "but having such an acclaimed astronomer explain the process to you makes this an especially unique experience."

HiddenRadio Design

Two designers have created a simple, unassuming radio and Bluetooth wireless speaker which is taking on the competition of complex electronic devices. No knobs, buttons, or displays. The product was designed on the basis of consumer intuition. The user simply twists the sleek metallic or graphite black housing to elegantly adjust the volume. It has been available on Kickstarter.com for only two weeks and has already far exceeded their goal of $125k, at the time of printing this article they were already at $185k. And with over 40 days to go in their Kickstarter.com there seems to be no signs of slowing down. "We always believed in this product and knew other people would too though we couldn´t have anticipated such an incredible response. The extra money will really help us add more features and deliver an even higher quality product," says Australian designer John Van Den Nieuwenhuizen now based out of San Francisco. John and his business partner Vitor Santa Maria founded HiddenRadio Design over 4 years ago. Vitor is from Rio de Janeiro but has been a designer in Milan for over 18 years.

Silanis

Silanis, the leader in enterprise e-signatures and the provider with the largest e-signature deployments, encourages businesses and organizations of all sizes to adopt the newly released SPeRS 2.0 guidelines (Standards & Procedures for Electronic Records and Signatures), published by the Electronic Signatures and Records Association (ESRA). SPeRS provides a series of guidelines on how to implement e-signatures and e-transactions. The SPeRS 2.0 update focuses primarily on government regulatory developments and changes affecting e-records and e-disclosures that have surfaced in the past eight years since the first version was released. This has become especially important as transactions for services such as banking, insurance, investment and health are happening more frequently on the web and regulatory changes are being made to keep pace with new technologies such as social networking, mobile devices and cloud computing. "It´s interesting to note the shift in drivers for paperless processes. Just a few years ago, these were primarily cost reduction and efficiency, but today it is all about improving customer experience," said Michael Laurie, Silanis co-founder and vice president of strategic planning. "Consumers are comfortable with the web and mobile technology, and as such they are driving the demand for e-signatures."

Advertising Specialty Institute (ASI)

Digital power player Randi Zuckerberg spoke to ASI Radio to advance a keynote speech she´s giving May 10 at a trade show in New York City hosted by the Advertising Specialty Institute (ASI) on Social Change Through Social Media: How the Web is Changing the Way We Live, Vote, Organize and Work. The Harvard grad spoke on ASI Radio about branding, connecting with clients in cyberspace, becoming a media empire-builder like comic Tina Fey and singing in a cover band called Feedbomb. In her interview, she suggested companies tap the power of social media and mobile devices, talk to people in the real world and focus on building a brand instead of being cool. "More and more companies are creating beautiful experiences on mobile devices, on tablets," said Zuckerberg, former director of market development for Facebook, in an interview Tuesday on ASI Radio. "They´re bridging all those experiences – watching content on TV and having incredible mobile experiences simultaneously. Offering deals on mobile. We´re on the tip of the iceberg with mobile, and I´m really excited to see where we go." Zuckerberg, who´s launching R to Z Media to help companies take advantage of social media, said she advises people to "provide a product so useful people want to use it around the clock, like e-mail. Focus on building a brand, rather than on being hip or cool."

Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM)

Agricultural machinery manufacturers expect overall 2011 business to the U.S., Canada and worldwide to grow in the 6-to-7-percent range by year-end but then taper off 2012 through 2014, with exports sales anticipated to increase the most, according to the annual business "outlook" survey of the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM). Looking at combine and tractor sales for the U.S. and Canada, declines are mostly expected for combines; for 4-wheel-drive tractors, sales are expected to be stronger 2011 – 2012 and then decline; and among 2-wheel-drive tractors, business is predicted to grow the most overall for machines in the 40-100 HP range. For other types of equipment, while there is a wide range in response, demand is expected to remain in the plus column for most products 2011 through 2014. The survey asked respondents to rank how several factors would influence sales. Commodity prices were cited as a key positive factor, as well as interest rates and increased export demand. Negative factors included the state of the general economy and steel prices. AEM is the North American-based international trade group representing the off-road equipment manufacturing industry. Each year the association polls its agricultural equipment manufacturer members about anticipated sales of the machines and equipment that help farmers and ranchers produce the food to meet growing worldwide needs.

BIGinsight™ and the Automotive InsightCenter

A lot of ad dollars are spent on commercials showing people receiving a new car for the holidays wrapped up in a big red bow. But how many consumers are actually planning to purchase a new vehicle and of those, how many are considering a Lexus? Answers to these questions and more can be found in the Automotive Android™ Tablet App and InsightCenter™ from Prosper. For the first time marketers will be able to get a monthly look at the automotive market through the eyes of the consumer—what they are driving, what they are planning on buying, what they just bought, reasons for buying and which media influences them to purchase. This app is a monthly update on the mind and heart of auto purchase intenders. Marketers can stay up-to-date about the brands consumers are considering, how much they plan to spend and how they perceive competitors´ brands. The Automotive InsightCenter is unique because it pulls in monthly consumer insights from more than 8,000 consumers from BIGinsight™ and also pairs it with government data from the U.S. Department of Labor and the Energy Information Association to provide an additional layer of perspective such as how gas prices affect purchase intentions.

The Children´s Hospital of Philadelphia and the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI)

Sequencing the entire human genome took more than a decade before leaders of the Human Genome Project announced their completion of a rough draft in a 2000 White House ceremony. Finished in 2003, sequencing that first genome cost nearly $3 billion. Today, with advances in technology, an individual´s whole genome can be sequenced in a few months for about $4,000. But knowing just what to do with this knowledge has not kept pace with the gusher of genetic data. People can now have their own genome analyzed—all 3 billion pairs of DNA letters per person—offering clues to their current and future risks of genetic diseases. But what will individuals do with this flood of information? Is some of it information that they prefer not to know? How will knowledge of a child´s possible future risks affect the parents´ decisions now? These are just a few of the near-future issues being explored in a new four-year grant from the , the federal agency that sponsored the Human Genome Project. The Children´s Hospital of Philadelphia is one oocusing on pediatrics, to receive a new four-year Clinical Sequencing Exploratory Research Project award. Children´s Hospital will receive $2.2 million per year for four years.
