She´s Back – Nanny-State Nancy Has Plans for Your Children

Aubrey Clark
The one great thing about having a Republic majority in the House is we don´t have to see wide-eyed, former Speaker, Nancy Pelosi as much. Except for the reminder of what Americans abhor about the ultra-liberal ideology, is there anyone of any political persuasion that can honestly say they miss her dazed look as she spews non-sensible babble about her nanny-state proclivities?

Well, for those who do, they got a special treat this last week as she embarked upon a nationwide tour to introduce her newest utopian vision – nationalized child care. Citing her experience, as a mother of five or six, that she was never able to get a babysitter, she is intent on unleashing the power of government to free women from the bonds of child rearing.

That´s right. When she regains control of the Speakership, at the top of her to-do-list, her new program will "be doing for child care what we did for health care reform." Does that mean she´ll try to jam her child care legislation through the back-door, in the dark of night just like she did with the health care law? Does this mean that all American families will be mandated to put their children in government-run child care centers or face fines or jail time?

Will babysitting fees suddenly spike overnight the way health insurance premiums did after the law´s passage? Will the government ration child care services based on child obesity? If we like our current child care provider, will we be able to keep it? We don´t really know, because she has yet to formulate the specifics of her plan. Even if she has, Congress "would have to pass the bill so you can find out what´s in it."

Never mind that, from the outset, the American public has overwhelmingly rejected big-government´s heavy handedness in any aspect of their private lives. And, forget for the moment that her ouster last November was a clear referendum on her nanny-state policies and government largesse.

Nancy´s vision of a cradle-to-grave, social-progressive welfare state must be drawing her encouragement from the hedonistic entitlement ravings of the "we want something for nothing" Occupiers.

What else could possibly explain the timing of such an absurd pronouncement? Oh yeah….it´s Nancy Pelosi.

Make no mistake, we all have the deepest empathy for working men and women who are doing their best to raise a family while putting food on the table, especially in these troubled times. But, if the travesty of all of the previous attempts to redistribute wealth, for the "benefit" of the downtrodden has not yet convinced us that everything the government touches is doomed, perhaps we´re destined for a European-style utopia (which, by-the-way, has failed miserably).

The welfare programs of the 60´s drove the very people they were supposed to help deeper into poverty and created a fatherless society. We have yet to experience the full brunt of the health care reform, but if rising premiums, increased taxes, elimination of employer-provided plans, and the mass retirement of medical practitioners are any indication, we are in for a world of hurt. Why would anyone entrust their children to government-run child care?

Obviously, no reasonable, informed person takes the bizarre musings of Nancy Pelosi seriously, and they´re certainly not worthy of this amount of written space, other than it is a stark reminder that there are those out there who believe that the government knows what´s best for us, and can better provide
