While you are at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, try to check out the first prize painting - a large oil painting - by Clark Hulings called "Grand Canyon - Kaibob Trail." This beautiful piece of art is about a mule team that barely manages to cross over a Grand Canyon trail in deep, thick, winter snow.
All the galleries that deal with the American Cowboy are well worth a look. Here the world traveler will see what life was like for a working cowboy and how life was experienced on a working ranch.
Those interested in seeing how the west was won should definitely check out the Weitzenhoffer Gallery of Fine American Firearms. This gallery exhibits well over a hundred examples of the firearms, designed by Colt, Remington,Smith & Wesson, Sharps, Winchester, Marlin, and Parker Brothers, that were used to "win the West." Some of us may only know them from movies, but now you can see them up close and personal.
Check out the authentic prairie town here, called "Prosperity Junction." Here, the world traveler can enter some of the fully furnished dwellings, stroll through the streets and take a look inside some of the shop windows to browse the wares on sale. If it all doesn't seem too real when you are visiting, know that during the annual "Night Before Christmas" event, the whole area seems to come alive.

So how did the museum come about? It was set up in 1955 and was known at that time as the "Cowboy Hall of Fame and Museum."
And the original idea for such a museum came from Chester A. Reynolds, who wanted to honor the American cowboy and his era.
It was later in that same year, however, that the name changed to the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Museum.
And the name was to change again. In 1960 the name became the "National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center." That's the name that stuck and the museum was finally given full accreditation in the year 2000.
There's so much to see in this museum, any visitor on their holiday travel should be sure to check it out.
