Los Angeles Immigration Rally Low Turnout
Los Angeles had 650,000 at the Rally Last Year
It was billed as the day to get back at the United States for raids against illegal aliens. The numbers were supposed to be in the hundreds of thousands. Businesses across the country were supposed to shut down (mainly the ones along the parade route were closed), children were supposed to walk out of school (only 600 did so), and no one was supposed to buy any goods.
The reality is that 11:30am the parade started on Olympic and Broadway, but the crowds did not come. There were thousands, but not hundreds of thousands as the organizers planned. In fact, the crowd was like that of Disneyland on a crowded day. Maybe there were 5,000 on the streets, but many were not marching. Some were spectators, while others just happened upon the march. Last year. Los Angeles had the largest rally in the world with 650,000 as the official count.
Hispanic vendors were in large supply with hotdogs, flags, and drinks.
Los Angeles is central to any national turnout because Southern California is home to more than 1 million illegal immigrants.
The Immigration issue has been a hot topic for the last two years. Many feel that some did not come out because Democrats are controlling the House and the Senate. They believe with them in office then they have a chance for citizenship, though they entered or stayed in the Country illegally.
The last proposal would have charged illegal immigrants to gain their citizenship through the Temporary Worker Program. President Bush said: "By creating a lawful and orderly channel for foreign workers to come to America on a temporary basis, a temporary worker program would help reduce the number of people trying to sneak past the Border Patrol, freeing agents to focus on apprehending violent criminals and terrorists who pose a threat to our security."
He further clarifies his position:
The President Opposes Amnesty. Amnesty is the forgiveness of an offense without penalty. It should not be given to people who entered our country illegally.
Illegal Immigrants Who Have Roots In Our Country And Want To Stay Should Have To Pay A Meaningful Penalty For Breaking The Law, Pay Their Taxes, Learn English, And Work In A Job For A Number Of Years.People who meet a reasonable number of conditions and pay a penalty of time and money should be able to apply for citizenship, but approval would not be automatic, and they will have to wait in line behind those who played by the rules and followed the law.
If the Los Angeles base cannot get the numbers they need to have a voice, then they may lose their voice in the process of citizenship.
A second march is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Vermont Avenue and 3rd Street.
