Artic ice melting faster than predicted – No need to wait for God’s help!

Ian Brockwell
A recent study has shown that the Artic Ice is retreating much more quickly than predicted in the latest IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report, around 30 years sooner than computer models have forecast! The lead author of this new study, Julienne Stroeve, said “There are huge changes going on”

Whilst melting Sea Ice may not have any significant effect on sea levels, it will affect the overall problem of Global Warming, and accelerate the Climate Changes we are already seeing (and speed up the melting of ice that does not float on the sea).

Unfortunately, we have reached a point in time where trying to reduce greenhouse gases is no longer a viable option, at least for avoiding a catastrophe in the short term. We have to face the very real possibility that sea levels will increase dramatically, and consider how best to cope with this.

Although I agree with those that say the planet will recover without any human help, history has shown this to be a fact, what we don’t know is when this will happen. In time, temperatures will fall and there will be another ice age, but this could take thousands of years, can we wait that long?

Some have suggested that “God” will protect us and provide a solution. I haven’t seen anything to support such hope and wonder why a “God” would place us in such a situation in the first place. But then I keep forgetting, it’s all part of that “plan” of his.

Sadly, the “God” option, or simply waiting and doing nothing, is a very typical human reaction, always hoping that somebody else (or something) will come along and save our necks, because we don’t believe we can do it for ourselves.

Praying for divine help might be easier (and make us feel better), but perhaps we should resort to this when all other options have been exhausted?

Maybe, while waiting for other areas to develop, we could also ask our governments if they have made any plan for a worst case scenario? If sea levels should rise by 7 meters (for example), and the historic maximum is actually 100 meters, huge areas of land will be lost. This means hundreds of millions of people will be forced to move to higher ground, and we will lose the ability to feed them all (crop growing lands will also vanish).

By building special areas (zones) on higher ground, it may be possible to save some, but not all, of the people affected. But this requires a lot of planning and time. Time is something we may not have a lot of, and these special zones could take at least 10 years to develop. The sea won’t increase to dangerous levels overnight, but even a one meter rise is sufficient to cause serious problems, and hamper a plan such as this.

Things may become very difficult in the near future, but we can do something to reduce the damage. The question is, are we going to take this seriously and actually do something, or wait until the last moment and hope somebody else will?

In the book “Global Warming – The Final Solution”, Climate Change is predicted at a much earlier date than scientists have forecast, but it is interesting to see that their estimates are being revised on an almost monthly basis. Perhaps in a few more months they may actually be the same? Apart from getting a glimpse of how our world will be, if sea levels rise by 7 meters, the book also attempts to reveal the challenges we will face in order to survive.

The book may be a novel, but Global Warming is real enough. We may not be able to stop it, but with a little effort, we could save millions of lives.
