The Potential Benefits of Visitors Health Insurance

Andy West
While a visit to the USA can be very exciting and overwhelming, it can also become a difficult experience when visitors suffer from sickness or injury and need medical services or immediate medical evacuation. While the US has some of the finest heath care in the world, rates can be very costly, especially for those who suffer from a critical illness. Anxiety over where to get dollars to pay for medical bills could even add undue stress and degenerate the health condition of a sick visitor. In order to avoid this scenario, it may be advisable for U.S. travelers to look into the purchase of visitors health insurance.

Before embarking on a trip to the US, visitors should ask their primary health care provider in their native country if they are still covered and under what type of circumstances and up to what extent while touring in a foreign country. Many health care insurers in other countries offer minimal or even no protection to their clients while visiting America. Since this is often the case, it is only wise for travelers to look into acquiring medical insurance for travel in the US.

Health insurance for visitors is not the same as flight accident insurance, which only covers injuries or death resulting from an air accident. Normally, this policy does not cover medical expenses incurred when a traveler becomes ill or meets any type of accident during their trip abroad. Health insurance for travelers is also not the same as travel protection plans. Travel protection plans refer to the coverage of travel expenses when a tourist has to cancel their trip because of an illness, accident or certain other reasons. In general, expenses covered by a travel protection plan include coverage for lost or damaged baggage, travel assistance services, and very limited medical coverage.

Visitors health insurance for travel to America can either be a short term or long term policy. It is intended to cover a travelerīs medical expenses that may be incurred during their stay in the country, whatever the length of time may be, but generally up to a maximum of one year. Often, the dollar amount of the coverage is sufficient to cover major medical fees like lengthy stays in a hospital or emergency room.

Because there are many different kinds of health insurance for visitors to the United States, travelers should choose carefully the right kind of policy they may need. They should consider if they need plans that include emergency evacuation, which means that it can cover the expenses incurred should they become ill or injured and need to be sent home or transported to a place where they could receive suitable medical care. Plans that cover emergency reunion are those that will cover the expenses of transporting a family member to the ill or injured person during a health emergency. Repatriation benefits refer to the coverage of expenses sustained for bringing a deceased tourist's body back to their home country.

The plans also differ in coverage depending on how many trips are planned. Coverage can be purchased for a single trip, multi-trip or renewable. Single trip plans are those that will cover just one trip. Annual or multi-trip plans are those that will cover all trips within one year. Insurance plans can be individual plans, covering only one person, or family plans, that cover all family members traveling together.

One other thing worth noting is that insurance companies normally have some coverage that is excluded from their health insurance policies. Among these are medical expenses that result from the use of illegal drugs, involvement in risky activities or daring sports, and medical conditions that were present prior to the purchase of visitors health insurance.
