Aid for the Somali Famine lost thru the Corrupt NGOs.
There is a growing evidence of exploitation of funds for Famine-stricken Somalia by non-governmental organizations or NGOs operating under the pretext of serving Somalia.
An independent investigations is revealing that money donated by countries of the world for the famine-Stricken Somalia population were landing in the hands of corrupt NGOs and government officials, something which may discourage further donation from friendly countries. The Turkish Aid for instance, through its aid agency, KTI is supporting initiatives that offer free health services to the Somalis there and in other developing aid as part of its solidarity and brotherhood goodwill. This the only quality Aid that Somali people received. Apparently, most of the other donated funds or aid was obtained by some NGOs through fraudulent means, and is been diverted to accounts and resold to the local markets. I join all well-meaning people of the Somalis At home and abroad in rejecting as unjustifiably unacceptable.
Considering the Millions of US dollar set aside for the Somali Famine and the US$ 600 million dollars by the US agency alone could be lost as a result of "fraud, corruption and abuse" by NGOs. We do believe that the decision to protect the identities of these corrupt charities and governments was a complete disservice to the International community and motivation for such criminals to further plunge the suffering Somali people into increased socio-economic degradation.
On behalf of the voiceless, can only pray and hope that the names of NGOs and government institutions in Somalia, business people benefitting from the funds to the poor and famine affected People of Somalia will be exposed. We the people of Somalia at home and abroad need to know because NGO activities nowadays in Somalia seem far from positively impacting the famine-Stricken Somalis.
Most NGO activities in our country today are differentiated by self-aggrandizement resulting from the "fabulous lies and deceit" told by them in their administrative and financial reports to donor institutions. If government officials and business people are actually in this corruption web as the investigations suggest, who else it could be other than those entering the government with such corrupt NGO mentality.
We Somalis belief that this scandal or financial impropriety may not only be existing in NGOs, but also the UNDP, USAID, NED, etc., etc that are in partnership with local Somali NGOs. We are urging these organizations to begin identifying independent monitors not known by their partners to counter-check or thoroughly assess their activities and the impact they make on community life as a way of confirming whatever administrative and financial reports received from these NGOs.
Such exercise by these monitors and donor agencies must incorporate community leaders and dwellers who should be the direct beneficiaries of this donor funding.
We at the Somali can guarantee that when this mechanism is put into place and executed, donors can truly be assured of accountability and transparency in their assistance to Somalia.
