Sen. Harry Reid: The War Is Lost

Robert Paul Reyes
"As we've learned from reading the memoirs and press accounts and interviews following that war -- at the time there were 24,000 Americans killed in Vietnam -- President Johnson had to make a decision. The secretary of defense, the secretary of state and the president knew the war was not winnable.

But President Johnson did not want a war loss on his watch. And so he surged in Vietnam, sent tens of thousands of new troops to Vietnam. After the surge was over we added to the 24,000 dead Americans 34,000.

Now, I believe, myself, that the secretary of state, the secretary of defense -- and you have to make your own decision as to what the president knows -- that this war is lost and that the surge is not accomplishing anything, as indicated by the extreme violence in Iraq yesterday." - Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

Senator Reid's honest assessment of the Iraq war, especially his claim that the "war is lot", has triggered an angry backlash by Republicans. They accuse Sen. Reid of turning his back on the troops.

I fail to see why Reid's words caused such a firestorm of controversy; it's abundantly clear that the war is lost. You don't have to be a four-star general or a rocket scientist to realize that the Iraq war is FUBAR.

I feel like I fell down a rabbit hole, Reid's statement should be no more controversial than declaring that the earth revolves around the sun.

Anyone who values honesty should commend Sen. Reid for avoiding doublespeak, and telling it like it is. Like President Johnson before him, Bush doesn't want a war officially declared lost on his watch.

President George W. Bush is not noted for his intellect, but certainly even he is cognizant of the fact that the war is lost. To protect Bush's place in history, scores of American soldiers are needlessly sacrificing their lives.

From ABC News:

"Reid said he told President Bush on Wednesday he thought the war could not be won through military force, although he said the U.S. could still pursue political, economic and diplomatic means to bring peace to Iraq."

Thank goodness for a statesman who will speak truth to power. We need millions of Americans to march and demand that our troops be brought home immediately.

The war is lost! Democracy will never take hold in Iraq. The war is lost! The Shiites and Sunnis will be at each other throats until Kingdom come. The war is lost! Iraq is not a cohesive country. The war is lost. The Iraqi people have no desire for democracy. The war is lost! The war is lost! The war is lost.
