Why we're still interested in celebrity news

Bhumika Ghimire
Celebrity news is inescapable these days. The day Anna Nicole Smith died, I remember how CNN morphed into an out and out entertainment news network and did not talk anything about events in Iraq or what is going on in Washington, but focused only on death of this person who once posed nude for PlayBoy. Read this again and you will want to scream Why? Why are we still interested in celebrity news in midst of all this chaos in and outside the country?

There are many reasons as to why we still want to read about stars dining in Five Star restaurants, their fights, their million dollar mansions, while being blissfully unaware of events of national and international importance.First reason that come to mind is that we take celebrity news as a way to escape the gloomy reality. We hear about people dying, genocide, drought, wars almost every day. Add to this the stress of daily life, people are bound to get fatigued. So listening to celebrities making fool of themselves provides a little distraction and relaxation.

Other reason could be that we look at stars and wish we could be them. I mean who does not want that million dollar mansion, expensive cars and all the luxuries. Reading about them is a way we can channel our dreams and wish we could be in their position. Sometimes there are situation where we definitely don't want to be them, for example when they go crazy and shave their own head! but most of the time we want to.So what is the way to do it? Read and watch celebrity new programs.

Also there are people like myself, who watch celebrity news to get a lesson on what NOT to do. For example, when I watch Jessica Simpson talking about poverty I learned a lesson that never talk about something you know nothing about.

So my friends, although we have love hate relationship with these rich, spoiled celebrities, we keep reading and listening about them until our ears give up because we need entertainment, we need to dream and yes, we need some valuable life lessons.
