How To Keep Your Laundry Room Mold-Free
The laundry room is one of the most common areas in the house attacked by molds. Here are some tips that can help you keep molds away from your laundry room:
1. Install an exhaust fan inside the laundry room.
The concept is similar to that of your bathroom exhaust fan. In your bathroom, you would want to turn the exhaust fan on a few minutes before taking a bath to prevent the bathroom from turning moist. It keeps the air dry.
Since you will also be using water in the laundry room, you would want to do the same. An exhaust fan will also help dry up your clothes if the weather is not good for outdoor clothes drying.
2. Air your laundry room out.
In the morning, open the laundry room door and windows to admit fresh air and to dispel stale air inside the room. Also do this after using the washing machine. If it is not a windy day and you do not have an exhaust fan, a regular stand fan should work. Just install it inside the room and let it run before and after using the laundry machine.
3. Protect your washer from molds.
Molds also take up residence in washing machines. You usually find molds developing on the rubber gasket of a front load washer, on the wall behind the washer, in the washer drum and product receptacles and under the machine.
One of the key rules you have to know when using your washer is to keep it dry after using it. Use a dry cloth to wipe the interior of the machine. Wipe all the parts including the gasket, the compartments and the washer drum. Also check the part underneath the washer where water usually collects.
Leave the door of the washer open to let air dry up the washer drum. If your washer starts smelling moldy due to forgotten laundry or detergent residues, you can try running an empty hot water cycle and add a cup of white vinegar and a cup of baking soda. This will help flush out those molds.
These tips can help protect your home, especially your laundry area, from the invasion of molds.
