The Virginia Tech Event: Will It Change The Way We View Safety
Seeing that such an event left thirty-three persons deceased, some of us are probably viewing safety in a different way. And a few of the questions going through the minds of many are, can such shootings be prevented, if so how?
Or will there come a time when all public places, facilities and colleges will employ twenty-four security service with some of those security personnel stationed close to class rooms of those colleges. Or will all civilians be given the right to carry hand guns on his/her person when venturing out in public?
If I had to make a choice regarding this matter, I would opt for the twenty-four security personnel alternative. For although it might be reassuring to think that some irate or slightly disturbed individual might think twice about going on a shooting spree for fear that his/her intended victims may also be armed, is it really comforting to think that in order to ensure your own safety in public, you have to carry a weapon of that nature?
For there are some individuals among us who might not dream of touching a gun, much less to even think of learning how to use and carry one when venturing out. Something like this could be a little traumatizing to some, especially if a relevant situation presents itself and one is unprepared to act fast enough or reach for his/her weapon.
Not all of us are the gun training/toting type. On a personal note, I would opt for the police to provide the security that we need any day. For they are the ones who want to be trained to use and carry a gun.
With so much trauma already taking place in the world, no one needs to carry a weapon in order to ensure his/her own safety, especially if such individuals do not want to carry such a weapon.
Whether they arrive on the scene promptly or take a couple minutes to get there, let the police who are there to act when such situations arise do their job. For they are/were trained to handle such situations.
And my condolences go out to those directly affected by the recent event at Virginia Tech. For you have all lost someone close and dear to you.
