Katrina's Wrath, One Image Tells Many Stories

Judy Ramsook
Images come and go, but the ones that linger on in your mind are the ones you wonder about in the dark of night when all is quiet and sleep cannot find you as easily as on previous nights.

And those images might not be anything of a fantastic nature. It could be a clip from a video or a movie, or the expression on some one’s face when he/she has just been handed a disturbing piece of information.

But upon recently viewing a television programme, one image that seems to be lingering in some minds is the one in which some of those evacuees are standing, all huddled together in the Super Dome.

Huddled and awaiting no one at the time knew what. And while these persons were there seeking shelter from a fierce storm, who can imagine what frightful thoughts were racing through their minds.

Some, if not most were feeling different levels of fear in case the unthinkable would occur, like what happened anyway. A large portion of the city of New Orleans was destroyed, leaving thousands without a place to call home. And then there were some persons must have been a little optimistic.

For they must have been hoping that nothing of too destructive a nature could happen. Because storms have come and gone before Katrina made her appearance, but with less harsh results. And if nothing too intense occurred before, why would it happen now? Then there were others who felt that their prayers would reach their Supreme Being.

For they were probably thinking that a Supreme Being to whom they were being faithful would not let them down in their time of need. For through sufficient prayer and other forms of worship, that entity would reach out and save them, their homes and their city from the plight of a combination of strong winds and hard rain And then there must have been a few who were wondering, what if indeed the unthinkable were to actually take place?

What would happen to all those just as seen in the video clip, and more who were huddled elsewhere had most of the city been destroyed. The questions can be endless starting from, where would they go, where would they live, would the city be in well enough condition so they can return to their jobs?

Well suffice to say, those questions are being answered answered because as we all know, the unthinkable did occur. And if a video clip can inspire one to conjure up all these thoughts, can one just imagine what a heart wrenching impact seeing the real scenes in New Orleans can have on one’s soul.
