America Needs Sanjaya Malakar More Than Ever

Robert Paul Reyes
The last American Idol contestant to be booted, Haley Scarnato, relied on her good looks to win votes. Every week her outfits got skimpier; God bless her soul she was delightful eye candy. Had Haley survived to the final round, she would have performed wearing a G-string and pasties.

The favorite to win the competition, Melinda Doolittle, depends on her amazing pipes. Thank goodness she doesn't try to curry favor by dressing slutty; American Idol's ratings would go down the drain.

Every Idol wannabe has his strength, that he plays up to survive the grueling competition. And that brings us to Sanjaya Malakar, a 17-year old kid with no discernible talents. Sanjaya's ordinariness may be his strength, the vocally-challenged teenybopper has nothing going for him except his goofy grin and his flowing locks. He accepts the taunts of the judges, and the jokes of late night comics with humility and good grace.

Sanjaya has become a pop culture phenomenon that transcends American Idol; even Hillary Clinton has been asked her opinion of the young man.

Sanjaya is the perfect water cooler topic; folks aren't going to engage in fisticuffs debating his chances of surviving another week. Especially now with the Virginia Tech massacre, we desperately need something silly and trivial to talk about.

Go Sanjaya, America needs you more than ever.
