This Liberal Endorses Judge John Roberts Jr.
I have trouble remembering where I left my sunglasses -- when they are sitting on top of my bald head. I was spellbound as I watched Judge John Roberts Jr. display an encyclopedic knowledge of the law under the most intense pressure.
When someone asks me a ridiculous question, I don't reply with a flash of eloquence, I'm likely to utter, "What cha talking about Willis?" However, Judge Roberts handled inane queries with grace, humor and forbearance.
When dealing with an obnoxious bully, eventually I set words aside and let my fists do the talking, but Judge Roberts resisted the temptation to slap Senator Kennedy and calmly responded to his hostile interrogation.
When I don't want to answer a question I shout, "I ain't talking about that", but Judge Roberts was so smooth that he didn't answer some questions in such a way, that I forgot what the original question was.
Robert's unflappable performance during three days of intense grilling has put liberals like me in a quandary. I'm not entirely comfortable with his judicial philosophy, but there's no denying his keen legal intellect, wit, and remarkable grace under pressure.
If the Democrats don't vote to confirm Judge Roberts, then they probably wouldn't vote to confirm Thomas Jefferson.
Judge Roberts says that the law, not his personal views, will be his guide in deciding cases. If Judge Roberts remains true to this ideal, he has an opportunity to become a great Supreme Court Justice.
