What Are The Most Common Teeth Whitening Mistakes?

James Woolley
Many people whiten their teeth themselves in this day and age. However although many home teeth whitening kits are quite easy to use, a lot of people still make some common mistakes when using these products. So let me discuss some of these mistakes.

First of all there are instances where people simply do not follow the instructions, and as a result get poor results or unwanted side effects. For example if they are using whitening strips they may be placing part of the strip over the gums, which will in turn lead to pain and inflammation. Similarly if they are using whitening trays, they may use more whitening gel than is recommended, and as a result it seeps over the edges onto the gums, causing irritation.

Another common mistake is that people will use a particular whitening product, get good results, and continue whitening their teeth for long periods of time. They may even whiten their teeth every day for months on end. The fact is that you are only supposed to whiten your teeth for a certain length of time because otherwise you risk damaging your teeth and making them translucent.

At the other end of the scale some people simply do not use a whitening treatment for long enough to get good results. Many home whitening kits require a treatment period of two or three weeks on average, so you shouldn't stop using them if you do not see instant results after two or three days, for example.

Finally although there are some really effective home whitening kits on the market, there are a lot of whitening products that are really ineffective. I'm talking here about things like toothpaste and mouthwashes that claim to whiten the teeth. When I first started whitening my teeth I tried all of these toothpastes and mouthwashes and none of them did anything at all. It was only when I tried whitening strips and tray-based systems that I started to get noticeable results.

So the point is that there are lots of mistakes that people often make when attempting to whiten their teeth themselves. That's why you need to do your research to make sure that you only buy whitening kits that are proven to work, and follow all the instructions to the letter. If you don't do this, then you will not get the results you were hoping for and you may end up damaging your teeth if you are not careful.
