High Tech Office Gadgets: Have They Really Made Your Life Easier ?

Judy Ramsook
If a person happened to be in business at the same time the fax machine was introduced, businessmen/women who invested in the machine must have been relieved to know that their world was about to become a little easier. Instead of waiting for their favourite courier service to get that document to a client in a matter of say hours, they could fax whatever document they had to in a matter of seconds.

Then with the introduction of the cellular telephone, internet, email and PDAs or Blackberrys, people who are always on the go could also take along their work with them without worrying about carrying around too much bulk.

They could talk or communicate with that important client while waiting in traffic, at some dining establishment for their order or at those airport gates prior to boarding their flights.

Those business minded individuals saved time by doing this, but now that all these convenient gadgets have been firmly embedded into any business environment, of course they have managed to make life easier for many, but have they also made some persons among us lazier at the same time? Or more addicted to their work than ever before?

Through a little observation, it is not difficult to spot someone who is not willing to do any more than he/she has to in order to satisfy him/herself or his/her family members for that matter while on the home front.

And why should they have to come home and labour over a hot stove, tidy up their homes, or mow their lawns when all day long at the work place they labour enough over their cellular telephones, PDAs, computer keyboards and other gadgets that are supposed to make their day at the office so much easier and convenient?

So maybe your day at the office has become more convenient than anything else, but if you find that you are bringing home more of your work than you ever did before, has using all those gadgets to make your working life easier really given you more time to spend with your family than before? Or have they given you a better reason for you to put in more off duty time into your work now that all these high tech gadgets have made it so convenient and easy?
