It Must Have Been A Slow News Day Until...

Judy Ramsook
On a slow news day just about anything can make the news to arouse excitement in the public’s mindset or the reporter/journalist who is conveying the bit of news for that matter.

But in a world in which so much is always happening somewhere, maybe there is no such thing as a slow news day, then again there are some things that will surprise and amaze the most naïve of persons.

For example, early one morning when I tuned in to the NPR station they were discussing the freezing of dogs’ sperm. I soon realised that must have been a slow news day and of course, for those among us who become eager when it comes to being informed about such matters, that might have been what they considered to be good information. But today, those eager for bits of news have much to anticipate.

First, there is the pending results from the Anna Nicole Smith’s paternity case as people far and wide may be eager to learn who the biological father of her baby, Dannylyn, is. Others who are still coming to grips with what radio personality, Don Imus said when he referred to the black players on Rutgers’ University Women’s Basketball team as being ‘nappy-headed hos’ are waiting to see how different persons are reacting to that.

For racism is and from the looks of things, will no doubt continue to be a sensitive issue. Different people have been lashing out at this for some time now. Are they frustrated maybe because there is too much hip hop/rap music being played on the radio these days?

So much so that all that rap/hip hop seems to be drowning out the voices of the rock and roll performers/artists? Or is it the escalating crime rate in some places? Or is it that some people are never satisfied no matter what? What if a racist individual were to end up in some parallel dimension in which there are no other people but those from his/her own race and kind? Would that make that racist person happy then or would he/she find something else to complain about?

So maybe some people will always be dissatisfied with those around them, it’s a part of life. But whenever some celebrity or radio/television personality refers to those of the darker skin colour in a negative light, some of us might hear things that are not being spoken blatantly or at all. Usually it’s always the same thing though, like maybe the white man is calling and he wants his world back.

And that might make for a not so slow news day.
