The Ghost in the Street

David Slone
Do you believe in the existence of ghosts? There are a lot of things going on in the paranormal world that most of use may not notice. However, there are many people who experience strange and unusual encounters with things that can only be described as ghosts. Here is a true ghost story that was written by a friend of mine. Now for the ghost story:

Panting and screaming, I woke up in a cold sweat with my heart pounding like a hammer in my chest. I looked around wildly, and realized it had only been a nightmare I'd been having....it hadn't been real. I let out a breath and flopped back onto my bed. I glanced at the clock and saw it was only 2 am. Damn.

My window was open and a chilly evening breeze was blowing through. I laid there for a moment, and decided to get up and go out for a nighttime walk to clear my head and smoke a cigarette. I got up, got dressed, and headed out.

I walked out my door and headed down the sidewalk. The moon was gibbous and shone brightly over the neighborhood giving a soft, silvery glow to everything. The few street lights left puddles of light on the pavement beneath them. In spite of all this brightness, it seemed strangely dim. The cold little zephyr breeze soughed through the trees rattling the dead leaves still clinging to the branches making them sound like the rattling of bones. I pulled out a cigarette, popped it between my lips and reached for my lighter. I dug in my pockets to no avail. I'd forgotten my lighter at home.

I gave a sigh, trying to decide whether or not to run back and get a lighter when I heard my name being called. I turned around to see a man who looked to be in his early to mid forties. He had dark eyes, and salt and pepper colored short hair. He was wearing clothing that seemed to me to be a bit dated. A type of black dress shirt and blue slacks that had been in style some time in the early part of the 20th century.

Something about him gave me a creepy feeling...although I couldn't have said why just then. He said, "Hey, need some fire?" I told him, "Thank you, yes." He said, "Here, you can have this one." He tossed me a lighter, but I fumbled and missed it. As I bent to pickup the lighter, I looked up and my blood went cold. The man had no legs! He was floating in mid-air!

He must have seen my expression because just then he laughed. It sounded empty, hollow, and dead. I was talking to a ghost! I gathered my courage and asked the ghost what he was laughing at, and he made no comment. He just floated there smiling an eerie smile. I said, "You have no legs!" He said, "Don't I?" I looked down and his legs were there! I lost my courage, turned, and bolted for home. The ghost's dead laughter echoing behind me in the otherwise quiet night.

When I got home, I bolted the door behind me and ran to my bedroom diving under the blankets of my bed shivering with fear. I heard no more laughter coming from the street. The night had become as still as a tomb.

I had a strange fever for the next two days, and I was bedridden for a week with a mixture of extreme lethargy and fear. I never told anyone about my experience, but I will never forget it.
