Mattress Moving Nightmares

Mike Catherall
Have you ever tried to move a king size mattress with a car? The only way to do it is to roll down the windows, throw the old mattress on the roof, and run nylon ropes through the interior of the vehicle. When you synch it up, the passengers can´t open their doors. Imagine that you are driving your king size mattress up a windy mountain road beside a glistening lake. The sun reflects into your eyes and in a flash of blinding yellow light, you drive off the cliff, and fall into the water below. The doors do not open. They are held fast by your mattress.

There´s an old movers´ trick, where you take a moving strap and wrap one end around your hand. The other mover does the same. The two of you slip the strap underneath the mattress, lengthwise, and carry it in a sling. That way, you can free up a hand to open doors, or carry a lamp, or even a rug, rolled up tight. Where did the owner go?

A king size bed won´t fit in an elevator. Most of the homes around Victoria have steps like crooked teeth. The best way to hold a king size mattress, when climbing stairs, is with your face. You push the bed against your cheek with one hand. The other goes underneath. And then you trudge, up one wooden step and then the next. Your girlfriend is behind you wondering why you had to do it yourself and why you didn´t just call the movers, and that the bed is old anyway, and it stinks, and she´s not sure if she wants to move in with you anymore.

King size beds have two box springs. Both from single beds. When driving you must stack them one on top of another and hold them down with bungee cords and rope. The foundations must be placed properly. A strong breeze can sail you air-born if it hits are the right angle. And into the side of an overpass. Where your vehicle will explode on impact.

Moving a mattress can be a nightmare. If you need some better dreams, Mattress Choice will deliver.
