Camarillo, Calif. high school an ACE in the hole for Tri-Counties SMACNA
(CAMARILLO, Calif.) – Did you know there is a high school in Camarillo chartered by the Oxnard Union High School District that is meeting the needs of students by offering a different way to learn?
ACE High School (Architecture, Construction and Engineering) curriculum meets the same high school standards and core learning classes as other California high schools, with the exception of mandatory classes specifically geared towards the construction profession.
In addition to English, math, history and language, students must also complete courses in AutoCAD, construction and environmental sciences. In the construction component, students work with electrical, HVAC, Arch sheet metal work, drywall, plumbing, concrete, solar energy, framing, brick and tile setting and flooring.
While students in a general campus classroom may study Shakespeare and poetry as part of their English component, students at ACE may apply lessons to write business and marketing proposals and other materials relevant to the business world.
"Although ACE teaches the same curriculum as other high schools, our instructors teach with a different approach," said Ron Fisher, principal. "Students understand concepts much clearer with our hands-on, practical approaches to learning as we present real-life scenarios, not only theory. These are life applications they can apply whether they continue to a trade school such as the Tri-Counties Sheet Metal Apprenticeship Program, military, community college or a four-year college."
David Maquinalez, training coordinator and instructor at Tri-Counties Sheet Metal Apprenticeship agreed with Fisher saying, "Students attending ACE are definitely prepared for higher education after graduation to pursue a degree and career in architecture, physics, mathematics, business, science, medical, hands-on trades and many more fields open to youth today."
"Preparing students for life and a career in the construction industry during high school years at ACE is a perfect foundation for entering our training center as an apprentice," said Tony Skinner of the Tri-Counties Building and Construction Trades Council. "After graduation students will enter the programs we offer ahead of the curve and can begin earning as they learn almost immediately."
The Tri-Counties Sheet Metal Apprenticeship Program accepts individuals 18 years of age and older to train with craftsmen as apprentices. Trades include heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, architectural sheet metal, industrial sheet metal, kitchen equipment, specialty stainless steel work, custom fabricating, service, siding and decking, testing and balancing and energy management and maintenance.
Tri-Counties Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning National Association sponsor a million dollar training facility in Ventura. Apprentices must complete 800 hours of classroom training and 8,000 hours of on-the-job training to become a journeyman sheet metal worker.
The ACE school currently is accepting applications for incoming 2011-2012 freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. Call 805-437-1410 for information and an application.
