Cinderella's Evil Stepmother Stigma

Judy Ramsook
There have always been good and bad people in the world in spite of their skin colour, nationality or race. Most times we form opinions about others before we are even introduced. For sometimes, that judgmental part of us would not leave anyone alone.

But when a fairy tale such as the Cinderella one has inundated our society with the notion that all stepmothers are deemed bad, it says volumes about the story and that notion. For it seems stepmothers have been receiving a bad reputation for quite a while.

They are the ones who come into a romantic relationship with a mate who already has children with a former lover or spouse. And in spite of what that judgmental part of us thinks about this stepmother type, there are some individuals who fit this category who are quite different from the Lady Tremaine character in the story.

They can be loving, non abusive and for the most part, pleasant, even if they are not received well by their love interest’s child or children. In all reality, if one’s parent is still pretty much alive and well, no one wants that parent or biological mother replaced with his/her father’s new lover or paramour.

Especially if those kids are old enough to remember what their biological mother is/was like. Getting accustomed to someone who they are unfamiliar with can be quite trying, complex and can leave the person with no kids wondering why she did not settle for someone who had no kids from a previous relationship or spouse.

The thing is, we never with whom we are going to fall in love. The feelings, chemistry and compatibility fall where they may, and even though there are some stepmother type relationships that do and have managed to stand whatever tests were placed before them, there are others that were and have not been that patient. Lady Tremaine, wherever she is, must be proud.
