Villaraigosa Nabs Democratic Party Nod

Greg Anderson
Los Angeles. March 22, 2005. By a narrow margin, the Los Angeles County Democratic Party endorsed LA City Council Member Antonio Villaraigosa for Mayor of the City of Los Angeles. Villaraigosa, who finished first in polling city-wide in the March 8, 2005 primary election faces incumbent Democratic Mayor, Jim Hahn, in a May 17, 2005 run-off.

Introduced to the delegates by former Mayoral candidate, Senator Richard Alarcon, Villaraigosa committed himself to a progressive agenda including a strong commitment to diversity. This message carried the day at the meeting and Villaraigosa emerged with the Democratic Party’s endorsement. Unless challenged, this endorsement will become the official endorsement of the California Democratic Party within 30 days. Four years ago, when Villaraigosa obtained the California Democratic Party endorsement, the party expended tens of thousands of dollars on his behalf.
