"A planned Holy Week exhibition of a nude, anatomically correct chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ was canceled Friday amid a choir of complaining Catholics that included Cardinal Edward Egan.
The 'My Sweet Lord' display was shut down by the hotel that houses the Lab Gallery in midtown Manhattan, said Matt Semler, the gallery's creative director. Semler said he submitted his resignation after officials at the Roger Smith Hotel shut down the show."
Christians and non-Christians alike get into the Easter spirit by eating a chocolate bunny or two.
Only an individual with warped sensibilities would choose the Holy Week to exhibit a nude, anatomically correct chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ.
America is religiously diverse, and we most take pains not to offend anyone's sacred beliefs. It seems fairly obvious: Chocolate bunnies OK; Chocolate anatomically correct six-foot chocolate Jesus not OK.
I don't believe in censorship and the artist, Cosmo Cavallaro, has the right to create controversial works of art. But why go deliberatley out of your way to offend Catholics and other Christians?
Some hail Cavallaro's courage, but that's hogwash. If Cavallaro wants to demonstrate his bravery, let him create a naked representation of the Prophet Muhammad. Catholics will protest by writing letters to the editor; Muslims will show their disapproval by issuing a fatwa.
