Passion Play is an American drama, written and directed by Mitch Glazer and stars Mickey Rourke, Bill Murray and Megan Fox. Filming for the production began in December 2009 with the support of Rebecca Wang Entertainment.
Mickey Rourke is Nate, a down-on-his-luck jazz trumpeter on the run from the goons sent by mob boss Bill Murray. Driven out to the desert and held at gunpoint, a gang of Indians who quickly vanish saves Rourke at the last minute. Trying to make his way home, he stumbles across a carnival, where the main attractions is Lily Lustre (Megan Fox) a knockout with an inexplicable set of wings. The two abscond together, Nate with dollar signs in his eyes and Lily looking for rescue and love. A torrid demonstration of physical love resets Nate's priorities.
Whilst watching the Passion Play movie, you can't help but feel like Rourke is telling the audiences something beyond the pages of the script. His treatment of the character is so comfortable that he putting to bed his own demons from his own personal downfall and redemption this reflected in the dialogue, too- "You were famous," "What happened?"
The lyrical love story blends old-fashioned romanticism with all the fantasy of a fairy tale. It is also a welcome sight to see Mickey Rourke in a role that bores beneath his shambling gruffness to find a tender core. The slow-burning passion that gradually simmers between him and a darkly vulnerable Megan Fox showcases the talents of both actors with finesse. Finally there is Bill Murray, the counterpoint whose role is to act as a cold shower whenever heat blows between the two star-crossed lovers.
