Easily Add a Fireplace to Any Room

Theresa Hill
A fireplace makes any room instantly warm and inviting and a fireplace always adds a cozy, welcoming ambiance. Think about your favorite ski lodge with a roaring fire blazing inside a multi-level stone fireplace. Ok, you may not have room for such a fireplace in your own home, but new developments in fireplace products make it easy to add a fireplace just about anywhere.

The approach you´ll take depends on whether you already have a fireplace and want to upgrade it or have no fireplace at all but want to add one with a minimum of fuss and expense.

For an Existing Fireplace

Many people have an old fireplace in their home but no longer use it to burn a real fire. It may be that it´s too much of a hassle to deal with real wood, smoke and ashes or there may be a safety issue with the fireplace or chimney.

An electrical or gas insert lets you enjoy your fireplace again without the chimney. For a gas fireplace, a vent is cut right through the wall behind the fireplace and a gas line is brought in to run the logs. A electric fireplace insert is even easier; just install an electrical outlet inside the firebox, plug in and instant fire! Holographic designs make both gas and electric fireplace inserts very realistic and both throw heat. With electric inserts, you don´t have to worry about carbon monoxide, which is still a hazard with gas. With either gas or electric, you can choose from a wide selection of fireplace facades, screens, log and andiron styles, and amenities, such as remote control and lighting. Most models are designed in standard sizes so they simply slide into your existing firebox. Of course, you also always have the option of revamping the mantle, tile and fireplace surround to make it more in tune with your current style.

Adding a "New" Fireplace

It may be that you don´t have a fireplace but would like to add one without hiring a stone mason build a chimney and firebox, which is a very expensive proposition. Take a look at the new freestanding electric fireplaces at fireplace specialty stores and your local home improvement store. These include the mantle, surround, screen and decorative façade all in one easy to set up unit. Simply set it in place against the wall, plug it in and go. Prices start around $150.00 per unit and come in a wide variety of style, from handsome Craftsman simplicity, to country oak, elegant cherry and marble and sleek modern styles. Most units are capable of heating up to 400 square feet, so they are an excellent choice for a basement room or bonus room that could use a little extra warmth. They can also add a beautifully romantic touch to a bedroom, dining room or living space. Now all you have to do is pick out a gorgeous wall art to hang above the mantle! From figurative and nude metal wall sculptures to traditional paintings or tropical sunshine metal sculptures, online metal wall art stores have the widest selection.
