The real shame of Katrina: Agenda
As rescue efforts continue in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina the blame game of who is responsible has shifted into high gear. In typical fashion Democrats and their media cohorts have looked at the carnage that is Louisiana and Mississippi, witnessed the bodies floating in the filth of the flood, and decided to go on the attack. Senator Clinton, the queen of opportunists, is demanding a 9-11 style investigation. Yes, now this is one of those leadership decisions which validate her running for President in 2008. Let’s pull rescue organizers away from the massive effort to save those who managed to survive Katrina so dozens of senators can ask inane questions that will result in the same protective conclusions that the the 9-11 commission did. Hillary it’s not time for a photo op its time to rescue Americans, dig out their homes, and rebuilt their state.
In the midst of the death and destruction there are those who only see opportunity. The race baiters such as Al Sharpton, Howard Dean, Rev. Jesse Jackson and a host of hip-hop nitwits do not miss an opportunity to politicize a natural disaster. When will concern, patriotism, and civic responsibility outweigh political opportunism? When will media see the enormous relief effort and rescues being peformed instead of capturing politically correct news footage to balance out the racial percpetive of looters?
Once again the media’s knee jerk reaction to events is building in a direction that only sheer heartlessness, racism, incompetence will validate. Despite the reality of the days surrounding the hurricane, power starved politicians grab onto whatever aspect of the news they care to see, and present it as the entire picture for their own political gain. After all if you say something in the media enough times and from enough sources there is a degree of the population, I suspect 47%, who will conform to whatever position is proposed irregardless of facts, logic, or first hand knowledge.
It is truly a testament to the humanity of America how we always pull together in times of crisis and achieve great things. No one denies that Katrina was devastating. Equally no one denies that Louisiana will be rebuilt in time and likely be far better off than what it was. But the rebuilding of Louisiana doesn’t change the disgrace of some societal facts no one seems to be discussing in favor of blaming the Bush administration.
A friend of mine told me that he has been part of the rescue efforts for the last two California earthquakes. He pointed out that it took one to two days for the federal government to assess damage, determine needs, and dispatch help to the areas affected. Two to three days for federal relief workers to have boots on the ground. How was Katrina, aside from sheer scope, any different in federal response time? Where were the boots of the National Guard that the governor could have activated? Certainly not in Iraq as some quickly suggested before being told be her handlers to disappear for a while.
How does a state run by Democrats who are supposed to “care” about the down trodden exist in such a horrendously poverty stricken condition? How does a state let thousands of people die when perfectly useable school busses remained submerged behind locked fences in a bus yard? Why wasn't there ample food and water in the Super Dome?
How do forty years of Democratic state and local government result in one of the poorest populations in America? How do the “caring” Democrats in Louisiana allow for the levees to degrade into near uselessness? It’s true that federal funding to fix the levees was reduced in years prior to Katrina but that doesn’t divert responsibility from the Governor to protect her people. Why didn’t whatever federal money that was available combine with Louisiana’s bond money, or oil money, or casino money to reinforce and strengthen the levees in the years before Katrina? The condition of the levees was common knowledge well before 2005 brought havoc. How it is that such poverty, such homelessness, and such a disregard for human life exist in a state greatly influenced by the party of Clinton, Carter, Jackson and Dean?
Advice to Democrats: If you want to control everything via the government you need use its power when it really counts. You can’t, like dictators, keep people uneducated and totally dependant on the government and not provide transportation, food and shelter for everyone when a Katrina happens.
The storm of blame will continue for some months. No one person, or piece of legislation, is responsible for the devastation being witnessed on the news. The blame is good rating fodder and it’s just another chance for some to discredit the country and the President in hopes of regaining seats in the senate and congress in 2006 and perhaps the Whitehouse in 2008.
There is a time and place for everything” I was told constantly when I was growing up. Its time now to save those we can, bury our dead, and begin rebuilding one of our states. It’s not time to make a mocumentary Mr. Moore, and it’s certainly not time to tear away at the nations resolve by placing blame on those in a position to make things happen. There’s time enough for panels, probes, and lawsuits when the people are safe, the water has receded, and things are being rebuilt. Until such time the rebuild begins politicians should be following the example of Senate Majority leader Dr. Bill Frist (R-Tenn) who rolled up his sleeves and immediately helped Americans recover from this tragedy.
