If this continues, scientists predict polar bears will be extinct in Alaska by 2030 and worldwide by the end of the century.
To save them, the federal government established a 120-million-acre protected area for the polar bear last year. Joseph, it's the largest protected wildlife area in history. Spanning the shore and icy oceans of northern Alaska, it's bigger than the entire national park system. And every bit of it is needed to save the polar bear and provide safe habitat for walrus, ice seals, beluga whales and hundreds of other species.
But this month ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, BP and 11 other oil giants filed suit to abolish the protected wildlife habitat. We need your help to stop them.
Joseph, please donate generously to the Polar Bear Protection Fund that we set up especially for this fight. It's your last chance to help -- we're moving out of fundraising mode and into legal-battle mode as the polar bears' day of reckoning approaches.
Here's what we'll do with your contribution:
Formally intervene in the oil-industry lawsuit on behalf of the polar bear;

And we really have our work cut out for us -- the state of Alaska has also filed suit to strip polar-bear safeguards. Following Big Oil's lead, Alaska complains that the protected wildlife habitat will limit oil drilling and new pipelines. These, the state argues, are more important than saving polar bears and preserving the last, best American wilderness.
We disagree.
