Outlook for 2011 West Virginia Football Team

Jason A Forthofer
West Virginia football is indeed working within a bit of a transition year. There are many people out there who like the idea of moving away from current head coach Bill Stewart and going to former Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Randy Holgorsenin 2012. You have to believe that the Big East Conference is very winnable for West Virgina this season, given the rebuilding projects that Pittsburgh and the University of Connecticut are having to endure. West Virginia is going to need to find a way to make sure they can make the necessary adjustments to be successful without an explosive player like Noel Devine. Noel Devine did have several injuries in the past so they should have an idea of how to handle the situation with their best overall talent not being on the roster.

Oklahoma State had a very dynamic offense under Randy Holgorsenin within the situation. You have to realize that Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy was particularly sad to see his offensive coordinator go away and he does realize exactly what a great coach West Virginia happens to be getting in the future. Bill Stewart knows that he has a couple of holes on the offensive line to fill, particularly at left tackle having seen numerous seniors graduate in recent years. Quinton Span is going to need to be an explosive wide out that so many people are going to take notice of potentially. The offensive line and a relative spread offense happens to be very tough on the offensive line. You have to be ready to play in a spread offense.

Span does not want to be noted as one of the top recruits in the country from the 2010 class and end up being a complete bust. Span previously red shirted last year and the staff seems to think he was able to add enough muscle in order to be successful as a Big East wide out. Ivan McCartney is another young wide out that needs to develop for Bill Stewart to end up having a lot of success in his final year as head coach. Geno Smith is having football troubles and you certainly want Smith and Span to have a good connection.

Julian Miller needs to show progress at defensive end. The truth ofle the matter is that when you are replacing seven starters on the defensive side of the ball it can create a lot of turmoil. You have to remember that they are even going to end plugging in a couple of junior college guys within the linebacker position. The linebacker position is something that can make or break a football team as they try to find a way to stop the running game. Either way, WVU football tickets will still be a tough to come by as they are each season.
