War

Tim Williams
It was during the Vietnam era when I was in college that Edwin Star in his rendition of "War" hit home to an entire generation of Americans. Long before this hit came out General Douglas McAuthur most pointy quoted "War,The most malignant scourge of mankind" when he spoke during the surrender ceremonies that ended World War II. At another time before that during the treaty at Versailles following World War I named The Great War the phrase was "The War To End all Wars." In each subsequent generation since man has only renewed his most hideous and heinous self by posturing himself against others in the name of personal conquest for power, wealth, and control. What was supposed to bring about a ray of hope that mankind would finally end the carnage that has plagued all of humanity since the begriming of history continues to fade away almost as quickly with each peace treaty is signed. Sad to say man by virtue of God's innate gift, the ability to chose, some individuals always seems to ignite more violence against their fellow man and nature. This begetting violence always manifests itself to the point that whole societies are swept in a whirlwind of escalating turbulence culminating in the most horrific physical, emotional and economic upheaval that only ends in more begetting violence. When will we ever learn to use diplomacy, tack, benevolence, compassion and understanding instead of force in dealing with nations and or individuals around the world?

Sure the world today is filled with individuals who are so bent on destruction for their own perverted sense of justification of violence against others and nature. A direct case in point is what is happening in Libya where one individual is responsible for so much destruction. In all of history there have been nations whose destines rose and fell with each saber that waved. All too often certain individuals evil intentions manage to ignite passions of pure hate against their fellow man. Using warped ideologies under cloaks of deception and alright deceit they manage to reign terror on unsuspecting populations. Al-Quida, the Taliban and other certain Islamic Extremists are just a few groups that are bent on inducing violent acts to carry out their most evil intentions. Other nations and leaders all continue to counter these atrocities with equal or greater atrocities of their own in trying to combat the insurgence of these organization or individuals who are so vial and contemptuous toward humanity. War by it's very nature induces more war and in order of end the horrific destruction we have to become war itself. The concept of war by virtue in itself is self defeating in that by ending War is to engage in War.

As Edwin Star put it "War what is it good for? Absolutely nothing" This phrase in the lyrics of the title symbolizes the futility of any and all armed aggression by anyone. Using force instead of reason only escalates man's self destruction. A continued carnage against mankind will only continue until man learns to use more self discipline, nurture ones self through education, and achieve a realization of respect for the sanctity of life. To eradicate any and all acts of violence in pursuit of attaining personal self gratification man has to reinforce from the very beginning in life that all life is sacred. The choices man continues to make still resonates in more destruction of life and property. When General McAuthur said " If we can't find a way to resolve differences without succumbing to the most malignant scourge Armageddon will be on our doorstep." he was and to this day correct in his summation. Are we closer today in total annihilation of humanity or are we finally realizing the futility of War itself? The age of man is hanging in the balance.

The world as we know it is still continually plagued with certain individuals who callously act with malice and hate. 9/11 was just another example of what evil intentions arise out of the vile contempt for life by certain individuals and organizations. All too often man has been subjected to horrific atrocities caused by others in achieving their evil intentions through the wars that have been waged. If more individuals realized like Nobel did when he invented dynamite that the use of this invention would make going to war more in favor of those who used this invention and all other heinous inventions since, like the Atomic Bomb, for destruction rather than in peace for construction. war would become obsolete. The founding of the Nobel Peace Prize as a result of Nobel's realization that out of this most destructive force mankind must do everything possible to avoid the travesty and the horror of any armed aggression anywhere. Today with all the destructive forces that can be unleashed upon humanity man must now reinforce a global resolve that any armed aggression, any terrorist activity, or any blatant assault upon the liberties of man must not escalate. War or any justification to wage war has no place in civil societies today. Mankind has to find other ways to resolve differences if we don't we will forever be tied to the Neanderthal. We have the choice and War has to be the one choice we don't choose.
