AC Repair – Steps You Can Take to Reduce Your Bill

Andrew Stratton
Eventually even the best air conditioner is going to go out. Then you´re looking at a large AC repair bill. It might not be as bad as you think if you just do a little maintenance ahead of time.

Your air conditioner is probably one of the most important appliances in your home. When something goes wrong with it you and your entire family end up suffering. It always seems that if your air conditioner is going to fail it is going to do so at the hottest time of the entire year. When you are suffering through the heat you are probably dreading seeing that AC repair bill. There are things that you can do in advance of the breakdown to keep the bills down and the air conditioning going.

The first thing on your air conditioner maintenance list to avoid costly AC repairs is check the outdoor condensing unit. Before you crank up the air conditioner for the first time this year go outside and check the unit. You want to ensure there is no high grass or weeds surrounding it. Your air conditioner needs to be able to draw air into the system in order to cool and circulate inside. If there is excess growth this flow can´t occur. Also if you´ve used a cover to protect your outdoor equipment remove it before the first time you start it. If you don´t you´ll be blocking the flow of air and you could overheat the system.

Another great maintenance tip to keep the AC repair bills down is to replace the filter. A dirty filter will make your system work much harder than it has too, destroying the unit´s energy-efficiency. It can also cause the evaporator to ice over which is a far worse problem. Most filters are 60 or 90 day filters so you only have to replace them once every two or three months. There are also so called permanent filters available but these still have to be cleaned regularly in order to work efficiently.

Once you´ve changed the filter go ahead and start up the unit for about an hour. This will help you to diagnose any problems there may be. If you do this before the temperature starts to soar then you might be surprised to find that your local HVAC contractor can come fix it quickly and your AC repairs will be completed long before the first hot day hits. If you wait until its 90 degrees outside you might be put on a waiting list or pay more for emergency service.

When you take the time to do routine maintenance on your air conditioner you can save a huge AC repair bill later. Take the time to look for the problems before it gets to be hot weather and you can head off the problems later. Have someone come and clean your unit before the hot weather sets in, make sure that there is nothing obstructing the air flow, give it a test run, and be sure to keep the filters clean. Your air conditioner will eventually wear out; it´s just a piece of machinery. But by diagnosing the problem early you can save money when the bill arrives.
