Listening To Music Makes You Smart

Robert Paul Reyes
"Music hath charm to soothe the savage breast"

But music also quickens the brain, according to a new study.

From LiveScience.com

"Scientists have uncovered the first concrete evidence that playing music can significantly enhance the brain and sharpen hearing for all kinds of sounds, including speech.

Experience with music appears to help with many other things in life, potentially transferring to activities like reading or picking up nuances in tones of voices or hearing sounds in a noisy classroom better,' researcher Nina Kraus, a neuroscientist at Northwestern University, told LiveScience."

No wonder I'm so smart, I listen to music from the time I get up in morning, to the time I go to bed at night. Music soothes my savage breast as I fight the commute and it nurtures my brain as I surf the Net. Music is the soundtrack of my life, and it's on an endless loop, it's always playing in the background.

The Live Science.com article doesn't indicate if all types of music enhance the brain. I listen to oldies, jazz, blues and eschew rap, heavy metal and most country music.

I doubt if listening to rap will improve your vocabulary or enhance your brain power. A steady diet of rap might motivate a young person to become a pimp, but it won't inspire him to go to law school.

If music is food for the brain, maybe we shouldn't consider music appreciation classes an elective. Perhaps our children should be required to take music classes in high school.

Even now as I write this essay I'm humming along to Bob Dylan, I guess this will be another Pulitzer-worthy editorial.
