Young musical phenoms headline at Ventura Music Festival's Rising Stars Concert, May 5
This season´s musical Rising Stars Valerie Kim, Dominique Kim and Sean Chen, will take center stage at the VMF´s 2011 Rising Stars performance on May 5.
Southern California natives, Valerie Kim, 13 and her older sister Dominique, 15, now live in New York where they both are double music majors at the Juilliard School of Music.
An avid chamber musician, Valerie is also a violinist and pianist in multiple trio ensembles. Her young career includes performances in concert halls from San Diego´s Copley Symphony Hall to Washington D.C.´s Kennedy Center as well as appearances on multiple TV broadcasts. Valerie currently trains with the admired violinist Itzhak Perlman and Professor Donald Weilerstein at the Juilliard School of Music.
Dominique also plays multiple instruments and, prior to moving to New York, was a principal flutist for the San Diego Youth Symphony & Philharmonia. She has been featured as a piano and flute soloist with the San Diego Symphony, University of San Diego Orchestra, San Diego Civic Youth Orchestra and with the Young Artists Symphony.
Also performing in the Rising Stars concert will be pianist Sean Chen, 2009 prizewinner at the Cleveland International Piano Competition. Chen received his bachelor´s degree from the Juilliard School and is now under the instruction of Jerome Lowenthal and Matti Raekallio in the Julliard masters program.
Chen´s talent and expressive keyboard work exemplify a musician wise beyond his years. A resident of Ventura County, Chen has performed with several orchestras including the New West Symphony with Boris Brott and the Juilliard Orchestra. Chen received Julliard´s 2010 Gina Bachauer Piano Competition award, the Los Angeles Music Center´s Spotlight Award and the Glenn Miller Scholarship.
"We are so pleased to have three wonderfully talented young musicians joining us for the festival this year," said VMF Artistic Director, Nuvi Mehta. "Our mission is to not only bring world-renowned performers to Ventura County but also to provide an avenue for cultural and artistic exchange between up-and-coming young and seasoned experienced musicians."
