The Longwalls' Careers in Science Writes a Story with Sound

Kendra Rae Beltran
The tiresome routine of life and the inconsistent strain of luck can get you down, but then you get a sense of hope when music floods your soundscape. My music crush, Kurt Von Stetten´s band, The Longwalls´ "Careers in Science" is that escape into sound. Music, a form of art and up for interpretation and I read this album as the tale of a man avoiding reality on the road.

Title track "Careers in Science" tells his everyday staple. A day job has him tackling things common minds would never understand. The music paints a picture of a night at The Hotel Café on LA´s hipster row, right between Sunset and Hollywood. The man spends time there because that´s "Where things go to Fade" in an upbeat way. All the while he explores the lack of differences between "Sex and Work." A beginning, a middle and an end for me…but I won´t tell you how my idea of this tale winds down, for that you´ll have to check out the album yourself.

The Longwalls´ "Careers in Science" is an Indie array of tunes that allows one to create a story. The tracks are the pieces and your imagination the glue to arrange them. Somewhere in the midst of Deep Blue Something and Coldplay, you´ll find and enjoy what The Longwalls have to offer on their latest, "Careers in Science."

We´re all tiny books in one big compilation called life. Some of us will wait for what seems like forever for our climactic part to come. Others will have a romance novel their entire life. Or maybe one filled with just adventure. Or one that is a poetic tragedy. Then, there are those that will have best sellers. You know, the ones that everyone wants to read and base their versions on? Don´t forget the little paperbacks sold at the carwash that only a select few will ever lay eyes on. We´re all born with the power to either take what was written for us or choose our own adventures.-
