Tips for Doing Your Own Plumbing

Andrew Stratton
There are times when you can do your own plumbing jobs while there are other times when calling in a plumber is the wisest choice you could make. Here we look at how to find a plumber when you need one and some simple ways you can prevent big problems from starting.

When you own a home and a plumbing issue comes up it is not always easy to know if you should attempt to deal with it yourself or if you should call in an expert to do the job for you. Professionals charge a lot and often bill for the time it takes them to travel back and forth. For that reason you should only call one when it is absolutely necessary to do so.

When you know that a water problem is too much for you to handle then it is time to get a plumber in. What many people do is they compare plumbers based on the rates they charge. Should the lowest rate necessarily win you over? Not necessarily.

The problem with this is that low rates do not always guarantee the best work. Another thing to bear in mind is that the hourly rates that plumbers charge can be problematic to compare because they charge differently. For instance some charge their customers for mileage while others do not. Some charge their customers by the minute while some charge by the hour or the half hour.

You are better off looking for a plumber who has an established and solid reputation. Ask for references and take the time to check them out. Ask your family members and friends if they can recommend anyone whose work they were pleased with.

Drain problems are the main reason that most people call a professional. Clogs in drains are a very common plumbing concern but often do not necessitate a plumber coming to your home if you know what to do. It is recommended that you try different methods to find out what works best. Drains can be kept clean and clog-free with the help of ordinary household products.

Try pouring a combination of vinegar and hot water down the drain on a regular basis. If the drain in your kitchen or bathroom is clogged from grease then heat up some vinegar and pour it down the drain slowly. Allow it to sit for approximately 20 to 25 minutes and then follow it up with some boiling water.

If the problem with your bathroom sink or bathtub drain is hair clogging it then try buying a commercial drain cleaner from a local store. Follow the instructions on the package carefully.

Sometimes plumbing is too complex for the average person to do. If a new toilet or sink needs to be installed and you are not knowledgeable about this kind of thing then leave it up to a qualified plumber. What you can do though is to purchase your own fixtures which should save you money than if the plumber goes to the store and buys them and then puts them on your bill. Talk with the water expert about what is needed in terms of fixtures, brands, etc. and then go out and buy whatever is most suitable.

Getting into a habit of looking over your fixture on a more or less regular basis can save you future plumbing headaches. Check to see that fixtures are attached and tightened and that there is no water seeping out anywhere. This can save you money in the long run and it can also allow you to become better acquainted with the plumbing in your home.
