Mother Nature, Beauty And A Beast?

Judy Ramsook
Beauty is around us everyday, natural beauty that is. It comes to us in various forms. The early morning sunrise, or evening sunset, rainfall, sunshine with no cloud cover, shooting stars, starry nights, that first trip to a nearby beach and then there is at least one weather related formation that leave mankind in shock and awe.

The first time you witnessed the sunrise with its orange, pink and vast array of other colours, you were so moved that you may have wanted to capture the moment on film or more recently on digital camera format.. In so doing, leaving you with a memory of the event you will not soon forget as that sun begins its rise into the day sky. Then there is that one thing that is vital for our plant life, rainfall.

Although the flashes of lightning and threatening sounds of thunder may be enough to scare anyone, listening to endless drops of rain falling on your rooftop will be enough for anyone to raise his/her blanket closer. Especially if such an individual is already prepared for a night of restful slumber, but watching it fall as it makes its way down the street and into the drainage system can be a beautiful sight too. And after that night of heavy rainfall, what comes might be a beautiful day.

A day with no cloud cover, just clear blue sky as far as the eye can see. And after such a spectacular day of sunshine, there comes an evening sky that filled with stars. In every direction, east, west, north and south there are these bright, shiny objects looking down at mankind. Then something else is seen as someone decides to turn away from the view. It’s a view of something racing across the sky with such speed, this thing that is commonly known as a shooting star. Something which may make some wonder, isn’t Mother Nature a wonderful thing? Then comes one of nature’s ultimate experiences.

That first trip to a nearby beach. As some stand on the sand watching the waves come and recede feeling their feet move with the force of the water beneath them, they wonder, this is indeed beautiful. And the longer those first time beach goers linger on the sand, the more they feel that they can stay there for all eternity. For there is such a feeling of tranquility coupled with the relaxing sound of the waves as they come and go back into the vast entity of water from where they came. But water in this form is beautiful because it is where it should be, at the beach. But what happens when a combination of strong winds and hard rain come ashore?

What may have seemed so beautiful on the surface may not seem so pretty then. Because what happens is all that strong winds and rain destroy homes and lives alike when such forces of nature end up where there is a gathering of human life. Something that has been given a name. Hurricane or storm, that might make some wonder, how could something so beautiful be so dangerous. Is Mother Nature trying to tell us something we have known all along; that there is a darker side to all things? Or how could something so beautiful be so dangerous when placed at the wrong site?
