The End Of Democracy, Is It Possible?

Stan Grimes
Religion and politics have become perhaps more entwined than ever in the history of our country. The two structures, or cultures, are not morally compatible. When I say this, I refer to the well-known fact that politicians often give up their "spiritual beliefs" for the sake of becoming a player in a near-corrupted government. Many must play to the piper tunes played by lobbyists and big business moneylenders (donators). How can that be? How can you call yourself a good Christian, Jew, Mormon, Buddhist, or whatever, by playing the game of "I'll produce results if you give me money?" After all, that's the Beltway philosophy, is it not?

How can a man or woman, who declare to the world they are faithful followers of a God, in good conscience practice pork-barrel politics? Or, bend to the will of special interests groups, or single-minded lobbyists?

Our country has never been this close to civil upheaval since the civil war or the race marches of the sixties. What will our politicians do next to turn the key to open this door of unrest? We have in the United States a majority consensus to end the war in Iraq. We have a majority consensus in this country that we have a government that pays little to no attention to citizen desires. How close are we to a civil war in this country?

You laugh at the possibility? I don't. Civil disobedience brought Britain to its knees in India. Gandhi proved that it works, so did the Reverend Martin Luther King. It can work in the USA. We have just enough strong minded citizens in this country to create havoc within. We freed ourselves from Britain over two hundred years ago. Now, I believe citizens are getting just angry enough to free themselves of a corrupt government, a government that has forgotten the 1st and 2nd Amendments of our Constitution.

Once we were the greatest country in the world. Now, we are a government that has sold out its industries, its borders, its position in the United Nations, and its reputation in Europe. We have lost all that is sacred by mixing religion with government leadership. Mitt Romney is a fine example. I must paraphrase him when he told the public that he believes that people want to be led by a man of faith. The people want to be led by a man who makes logical decisions, well thought out decisions. The majority of the citizens in this country still want a piece of the apple pie that has eluded so many.

It is only a matter of time that grass roots Americans will someday become so fed up with our failing democracy that they will pick up their single-shot, shot guns, their rusted 22's, and Colt 45s, and march on Washington and demand our crippled partisan legislators to leave their offices and return to their homes. Can it happen? Will it happen? Perhaps we should study the failed democracies in the history of this world. They failed. Why? Corruption. One very simple word brought down many great governments.
