NLL: Lumberjax Set To Cut Through League
The Portland Lumberjax have captured and to this point have put together a mixture of young guns and raising stars that will propel them into great standing for the upcoming National Lacrosse League (NLL) season.
It all started last month, when Portland was able to secure the superstar pairing of brothers Ryan and Casey Powell as well as Pete and Richard Morgan.
At approximately 8:14pm EST, last night, during the NLL Collegiate Draft, the Lumberjax made the move which many people were predicting wouldn’t happen due to the skills possessed by Merrill saying that Portland would use that to gain a lot of other picks, etc. via a trade.
I myself, am not shocked at Portland taking the former Georgetown star. Back on August 14th, I reported that they would use their pick to get Merrill, who brings the kind of tough but yet level headed persona to a team that unlike most expansion teams, seems to be putting themselves in a place to contend right from the start..
Back in June, Merrill was honored as one of the best defensive players in the game when he received the Williams C. Schmeisser Award from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA). He was also chosen by the USILA as a First Team All-American and given Defensive Player of The Year honors by ECAC Lacrosse.
Patrick Merrill the brother of Brodie Merrill was drafted 1st overall by the Toronto Rock after finishing his college career at Mercyhurst College (Erie, PA).
