Don't Let Oppression Get The Better Of You

Judy Ramsook
Throughout history, there have been many cases of the strong overpowering the weak, also known as oppression, but before it became an issue among people of different ethnic groups, it was something that was already taking shape among people of the same race.

For example, in earlier times before many people became aware of other races of persons, what they had was themselves, and each belonged to a certain class. Sitting at the top of this list were the rulers who kept their people in line by employing various means. For example, there were severe penalties if certain crimes were committed and so on. And the persons who did nothing wrong felt oppressed because of this, for those strict rules made them feel afraid to do anything. Then came the class of people who had something that others did not.

Wealth. For with this, almost anything can be achieved, a good education, life of luxury, good food and most of all, power. For example, two men are strolling along a street, one rich one poor. If the two men who are walking along the street with the wealthy man in front of the poor man, and other people saw them, which one would most likely gather more attention? The wealthy man certainly, for he would be viewed as the person with power.

And although there is no shame in attaining such wealth, the poor can be made to feel powerless if he were to stand next to a person of that criteria, thus resulting in self oppression. For if someone is not fortunate enough to be born into wealth, then he has to achieve that on his own, and therein lies a problem. Although some people are quick to nab almost every opportunity that comes their way, some are not as perceptive.

One opportunity after another slips past them, at which point the oppressed may blame society, but if some people are determined enough, they can overcome that barrier and keep on trying, especially in this, the modern age. With so much access to information mostly through the internet, no one can hold anyone back from much of anything, especially if some have the necessary qualifications for the job they want.

That would most likely be the one that will ultimately lead them out of their oppressed state and even bring out a gradual change in them as well. For if some people are not happy with who they are, then they might not be pleasant to be around. But if they were to suddenly start gaining a little more control over their own lives, then some happiness may head their way too, thus easing off the load of oppression that has been on their shoulders for far too long.

Not everyone is born into a trust fund sort of universe, and for those who are not, there may be some struggles along the road of life. Some of which are harder to overcome than others, but do not allow oppression to get the better of you for it can hold you back from achieving what you want to achieve; some control in your life and a way out of the darkness.
