George W. Bush Should Condemn Ann Coulter's Homophobic Remarks

Robert Paul Reyes
From FoxNews.Com:

Ann Coulter ... addressing the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C., remarked:

"'I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word "faggot," so I — so kind of an impasse, can't really talk about Edwards.'

Members of the audience seemed startled, then many clapped, and she proceeded to open the floor to questions, reported EditorandPublisher.com."

Did Ann Coulter offer a sincere apology for using such a vile anti-gay slur after she had a couple of days to think about it?

No, she laughed it off, explaining that she was "merely joking." Can you imagine Michael Richards explaining that he was "merely joking" when he called a couple of black hecklers "niggers"? Or Mel Gibson dismissing his anti-Semitic tirade as "just kidding"?

Of course not, it wouldn't fly. Nobody tolerates bigotry against any racial minority, but apparently it's no big deal to call a homosexual a "faggot." Ann Coulter didn't think it was such a big deal, and neither did her conservative audience, they clapped after she uttered the anti-gay slur.

Ann Coulter should be roundly criticized by liberals and conservatives alike. I applaud John McCain and other prominent Republicans for condemning Coulter's hate speech. But why is George W. Bush mute; it would send a strong signal if the President spoke out against Coluter's homophobic remarks.
