Edward Lear Parrot Art And Bird Paintings - Make Your Own Prints

Atkinson David
People who are interested in bird paintings or parrot art can do no better than look at this selection of 42 illustrations by edward Lear. Lear painted these illustrations in the 1800s.

Edward Lear used live parrots for his drawings rather than using stuffed birds which was the common practice of the time due to the rarity of live parrots.

His illustrations were originally called the Family of Psittacidae and were limited to 175 sets sold by subscription. By working from live birds Lear was able to capture their expressions and movements in lifelike fashions.

Fine drawings were highly valued at the time and these prints were the first collections that were dedicated to the species. They included Australian, African and American parrots bred by ornithologists Sir William Jardine and Prideaux John Selby.
