The State Of The Union 2011 A Different Perspective

Tim Williams
For over twenty years the economy of the United States has been festering because of the failed policies from our government. This past year was a continuation of these same policies that propelled this country into the worst recession, and some would be justified to point out we are still in a depression though not as severe as the Great Depression of the 1930's. The economic turbulence that began three years ago has caused the United States tremendous inner conflicts among our political parties. The Quagmire that is in our economic troubles is only exasperated by the stalemate of our elected officials to come to a consensus and compromise in putting workable solutions to end the many crises here in the United States.

Along with the current economic crisis the United States is firmly entrenched in the ongoing conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. To further compound the military's deployment and complicate matters is in certain global regions continue to be in such turmoil that our intervention is not only warranted but necessary to reduce any further escalation. Such was the case in Haiti following that tragic earthquake there. The recent terrorist threats, the recent shooting in Arizona, Al-Qaida, and the Talaban continue to dominate much of nations reactions to combat the continued acts of terrorism against all humanity. These sobering facts dominate the political spectrum in all levels of government. How our elected officials handle these crises is critical to the future of the United States.

But, so far the policies from one year ago still remain and there has been no real significant progress in any of our combat fronts. We continue to waste more American lives and billions of taxpayers dollars.

The continuing failure to resurrect our fast diminishing tax base has put this country on the edge of insolvency. A robust and expanding tax base is the main deterrent to any economic calamity. What the United States is continuing to do with the current policies in place is contrary to creating any type of economic momentum to actually increase the nations tax base. The current expenditures on our military alone have catapulted this nation further into debt while at the same time governments failure to reform the nations entitlement programs like Medicare and Medicaid into a one single payer Universal Health Care Insurance program continues to cost the tax payers billions of dollars from fraud, waste, and escalating unequal medical insurance for all United States citizens.

The failure to implement an energy plan is costing this nation additional billions of dollars we don't have further pushing this nation even further into debt so that if nothing is not done to reduce and eliminate the astronomical amount of debt this nation has already accumulated our future is in very serious jeopardy. Just last year alone the United States spent over $370 billion dollars on imported oil. This again is money the United states does not have. The Pickens energy plan is realistic, feasible, and can be quickly implemented. This would go a long way to eliminate our dependence of foreign fossil fuels that not only are pushing this nation further into debt but is continuing to thwart any kind of environmental stability that will result when we eliminate our need to use fossil fuel.

President Roosevelt in 1935 created vast public works projects that put those people who were unemployed back to work and in doing so built up the nations infrastructure and increased the nations tax base enabling the nation to eventually regain the economic expansion needed to end the suffering of the Depression. Today our infrastructure has been greatly neglected and in urgent need of repair and improvement to handle the needs of today's modern society. Putting people back to work through similar public works projects is crucial to creating economic expansion that has shown really no authentic signs of improving on its own. Without a vast public works project being established our economic recovery will remain stagnant and millions of Americans will continue to linger and languish in a continuing spiral of economic decay causing the United States future security to be vastly compromised.

Using a total National Economic Reform Agenda is the best way to address all the crisis that is plaguing the American today. From Budget Deficit Elimination partly through a reform of our tax code to a 10% flat tax, Education Reform to better prepare our youth for the employment opportunities of tomorrow, Universal Health Care this will eliminate over 400 million dollars in fraud and waste in our current entitlement programs, Social Security Restoration, Trade Deficit Equalization, Defense Initiative, Science and Technology Innovation, Homeland Security and Immigration Reform will all come about when National Economic Reform is implemented. The time to act is now. Whether we have the will to resolve our differences and come together uniting behind National Economic Reform is the question at hand. Until this happens the United states will continue to lag behind other Industrialized countries and all that the President has outlined in last nights speech is hopelessly unattainable.
