Why People Are Tuning In To The Anna Nicole Smith Hearing. One Word: Family.

Judy Ramsook
In the mid nineties when the O. J. Simpson trial was in full swing, people tuned in to watch what was then labelled as the trial of the century. A few years ago when Terry Schiavo passed away and her parents and husband, Mr. Schiavo, debated over her burial, again people tuned in to watch it unfold.

And a few days ago when the Anna Nicole Smith hearing began, again, people tuned in to watch that unfold. All three cases have one striking similarity. Family. It’s that reason we are all here, and the reason emotions tend to run high when a loved one passes away or is taken away via death.

For the deceased’s burial may sound like a simple enough act, provided that everyone concerned agrees on where the loved one should be buried or put to rest. And although not all of us might have the financial means the late Anna Nicole Smith had, there is one thread that makes us tune in. That of the family element.

Putting a loved one to eternal rest may seem easy in theory. But when there is a situation such the Anna Nicole Smith one, it can be quite complicated if a spouse/mate/lover of that deceased loved one and parent of the deceased are engaging in a verbal battle over where their loved one should be buried.

And this is something that can occur to any of us if all there is, is a verbal statement made by the deceased when he/she were still alive and well and there is a similar situation just like the Anna Nicole Smith one. The one with the next of kin who is a five month old babe and a spouse/mate/lover who knows where his deceased loved one wants to be buried, but it is not in writing.

Most people do not do not become involved in lengthy debates over where their deceased love one should be buried. But whether you possess one dollar or more than a million and your parents have picked out a family plot at the cemetery and so has your spouse, you might still want to put it in writing where you would prefer to be buried whenever that time comes. For you never know, one or the other might decide it’s time for a debate or hearing over this matter within the confines of a courtroom.
