A Band-Aid For Border Security, Or More?

Ken Hughes
The Government [aka] Homeland Security’s finally is waking up to the fact we have a problem on the border. It came only after Governors from Arizona and New Mexico took the unusual step of proclaiming it an emergency situation. Has Homeland Security finally concluded protecting the boarder is as important as searching old ladies orthopedic shoes and baby diapers at airports?

It’s unlikely terrorist will commander airplanes for their next attack. More than likely it will be a ground attack on one of our many inter-structures. The successes in Madrid and London have given terrorists new targets of opportunity. Terrorists aren’t concerned with the body count nearly as much as the publicity they receive. The terrorists aren’t fighting a conventional war expecting surrender of the infidels. They’re fighting a physiological war playing on emotions. They know disrupting daily activities and creating extensive damage can be more devastating than killing a thousand innocent bystanders.

Terrorists follow the path of least resistance. Until now, our borders have been one of those places terrorists can cross with impunity. There’re groups who enable illegal immigration by providing assistance in several ways, legal assistance not the least of their efforts to wrap their politically correct philosophy around the immigration laws of the country. One wonders why they [illegals] deserve more consideration than [us.] the American citizen in the view of those with liberal leanings.

Not only does the loose border policy of the past offer terrorists an entry point, it also offers the criminal element of our southern neighbor’s entry points. We’re feeling the effects of Latino Gangs in nearly every state in this country.

Congress and the President have dropped the ball on the issue of border security. Are they doing it for political advantage, or are they preoccupied with other more pressing issues. What could be more pressing than protecting the public from terrorists and crime?

There’re Army regulars, Army reservists, and National Guardsman stationed around the world in places that haven’t needed defending in 60 years. In such places as Germany, Korea, Japan, etc, etc. Why can’t these troops be brought home and deployed on our borders. Wasn’t the Army established to defend America, not half of the rest of the world?

The media as usual blame the president, The president did his part, he budgeted sufficient funds to greatly improve Homeland security. He appointed what he felt was a capable individual to administer the department. Later we find Secretary Michael Chertoff is only doing half a job. Either Secretary Chertoff’ dropped the ball, or he’s incapable of managing the bureaucracy around him. Such is the administration of government policy.

America isn’t responsible for the plight of the Palestinians. There’s no reason for America paying for relocating Israelis from Gaza. We can wait until the Iranians have a bomb capable of reaching America. Two Nukes and North Korea’s history. There’s a reason for American soldiers to be used to protect this country. It’s called Homeland security.

We need a guest worker program. It needs to be one that doesn’t give citizen benefits to foreign workers. It needs to place some responsibility on the worker not the government or the employer. The expiration of permits should be limited to one year. Reasonable taxes should be collected and records should be kept. An entry tax should be required, strict security checks must be incorporated in entry applications.

Ethnic sensitivity and political correctness be damned. It’s time to take strong measures concerning Illegal Immigration. We should continue to be a nation of legal immigration. There’s no DNA that defines an American as such. We come from here, there, and everywhere. We are every color, religion, ethnicity, and political persuasion. Changing that isn’t the issue, keeping it legal is the issue. That can best be accomplished by deploying the US Army on our borders to assist the Border Patrol. It’s not Trabajador los Pobres we object to it’s Los Pistoleros we object to.
