Do you treat God like a fire extinguisher?

Rod Smith
The fire extinguisher sits somewhere in the house. We only need it when an emergency occurs. Likewise, so many “grab hold” of God only when it’s crisis time.

Chances are when you are in desperate need of God’s help, He might not be inclined to help you, especially if you’ve heard the gospel a dozen times and done nothing about it.

Surely it makes sense to be walking with God day by day. The Bible says: “If you draw near to God He will draw near to you.” James 4:8 (chapter 4 verse 8). This writer has found it to be true.

Even waking in the morning is by the grace of God. Some pass away in their sleep while young! If that happens to someone “in Christ” they have the promise of eventually being in a far better place. The Christian can go to bed each night with a peaceful heart – and he or she will sleep well also.

There is a power greater than us. We think we are in control but we are not. All our money, education, prestige counts for nothing when thirty floors up in a skyscraper rocked by an earthquake, or 20,000 feet high in a crippled plane on fire, or in the midst of a tornado. In those times only God can save us.

In the news as this is written is the story of a young woman para-gliding and caught up in a storm. She was sucked up into the sky to a height of 30.000 feet, became unconscious but survived. She said in an interview that all she could do was pray.

It would be interesting to see how many atheists remain so, with bullets flying inches from their head. We get a true sense of our own limited importance when standing on a mountain top, surveying the grandeur around us. In light of that, we are like an ant compared to an elephant.

So we must get serious with God. There are those who perform a “religious ritual” in going to church once a week, then forget God until next Sunday. It is mere lip service. What He wants is a daily relationship with you. Psalm 86:3 says: “Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto you daily.”

He is there to help if you call on Him – but surely it helps in a desperate situation if He knows you first!

Dear friend, if you are truly “in Christ” you will have no fear – you have all the promises of God in the Bible to depend upon. The greatest promise is eternal life - if you will repent, trust and believe in Jesus; He said before ascending that believers would have a helper in the form of the Holy Spirit, who will “teach you all things.” (John 14:26).

Jesus says He is the only way to God: “I am the way the truth and the life; no-one comes to the Father except by Me.” (John 14:6). Come to Jesus today. Repent, trust and believe in Him. He is your only security.
