Keeping My Teen Healthy with Fish Oil

Michael Byrd
When it comes to teenagers, mood swings, stress and volatility are pretty much the norm. So at first, when I noticed that my sweet fourteen-year-old was getting a little sullen and moody, I did not think much about it. Even when I backtracked over the year and reviewed her health history and realized that she had been catching more colds and missing more school since starting high school, I still chalked it up to the stress of becoming – slowly – an adult rather than a child. Acne? Same thing.

However, I thought twice about my calm, accepting attitude when I read a study on teens and omega 3 fatty acids. It turned out that all of my little girl´s symptoms – from the moodiness to the stress and lack of focus to the breakouts on her previously smooth forehead – could be linked to an omega 3 fatty acid fish oil

deficiency. And if you have ever seen teens eat, if they are not getting a multivitamin then you can be pretty sure that they have at least one vitamin deficiency going on anyway!

So I talked to her doctor and described her symptoms. Not surprisingly, he was unwilling to commit to a diagnosis of omega 3 deficiency, but he did recommend a salmon oil supplement. Within about a month of starting the supplement, her skin cleared up and so did her attitude, her mood and her grades. Now, teens are funny creatures, and I´m not saying that the only thing going on in her life was a lack of salmon. But I will say that it certainly appeared to help her resolve multiple factors in her life that were complicating it and making it less healthy.
