USA Today reporter misleads readers by not investigating both sides of a story

Alan E. Moses
Anita Manning’s front page story in the USA Today newspaper from Feb. 9th 2007, Autism estimates increase sharply. Has some very inaccurate and misleading information. Claiming that the mercury compound Thimerosal was removed from all vaccines 6 years ago is just not true. Thimerosal is still in 80% of the Flu vaccines used and although reduced, is still in some of the childhood required vaccines of today.

Also you are lead to believe that all scientists claim that there is no link between Thimerosal and autism. Studies done independently of influence from government and the pharmaceutical industry have shown that Thimerosal can be classified as a contributor to autism as well as other disorders. The company that holds the patent to Thimerosal admits that this compound is in fact toxic to humans. Eli Lilly does not manufacture Thimerosal anymore. However, does sell the rights to manufacture to the Gihon Company of Argentina as Lilly owns the patent.

The CEO of Lilly Sidney Taurel is a major player in Homeland Security and the inability to sue any vaccine manufacturer is protected by this governmental entity. Kind of like the fox watching the henhouse. Homeland Security is intended to protect us from terrorism and those that may do us harm yet, Vaccines or ingredients there in that may inflict death or disability are protected from prosecution.

Dr. Verstraeten at the time an employee of the CDC’s National Immunization Program was the lead author of a study done by the CDC in 1999. Known as the Thimerosal VSD study Phase I-Update 2/29/00. A meeting was convened at Simpsonwood Georgia from June 8-9 of 2000 to discuss the results of this study. Using the Freedom of Information Act, Safeminds an organization that has long investigated this issue received the written transcript from this meeting. A quote from Dr. Verstraeten “We have found statistically significant relationships between the exposure (Thimerosal) and outcomes.” Is very telling.

Dr. Robert Brent also a member of this meeting appeared upset by the results of the study. He is quoted as saying “This will be a resource to our very busy plaintiff attorneys in this country”. “They want business and this could be potentially a lot of business.”

When the public was allowed to see this study it had been altered and adjusted so that the numbers no longer reflected the original results. Despite many requests the CDC has denied access for independent scientist to attempt replicating these findings. Scientific results require the ability to replicate information to claim a sound finding. Any true scientist will tell you that once you have completed a study you don’t have reason to alter said study just because you may disagree with the outcome. This is in fact is not professional or ethical.

I can assure you that if you would knowingly give someone a toxic substance that can injure or kill them you will be held both legally and financially responsible. We all make mistakes and should be forgiven if we acknowledge them. However, to continue making the mistake or to lie about it using the entity that is financed by the victim to protect them just doesn’t seem right.
